an angel in front of the town hall

If you visit the Azores, especially São Miguel, you will certainly visit the capital Ponta Delgada.
Here, you can do different things, you could visit different museums or walking along the beautiful public gardens or trying out the different restaurants and cafés. Of course, there are also the two harbours, the marina and the freight harbour or the idyllic oldtown.
Very typical for the old town are the original cobblestones in the narrow streets and the pavements decorated with the most different motives.

Also, you certainly passes the town hall Ponta Delgadas, which is located at the place "Largo da Republica" and is an eye catcher because of a big St. Michael Archangel statue.
The town hall was established in the 18th century and impresses by the baroque architectural style. Once it was the residence of noble families, but at the beginning of the 20th century the building was chosen as the administrative seat of Ponta Delgadas. The oldest bell of the Azores is supposed to hang in the tower of the town hall.
Again on the ground floor of the town hall there are sometimes exhibitions of local artists.
Directly in front of the building stands a figure of the patron saint of the island of São Miguel.

In 1499 the village of Ponta Delgada was declared a town.
And on April 2, 1546, the growing settlement was elevated to the status of a city by King D. John III.

It took time until the end of the 17th century that the construction of the present building began. An inscription above the coat of arms sign "1724" on the bell tower portal indicates this period of construction.

In fact, the building was almost in ruins in the 20th century, but in the middle of the 20th century, Alberto Oliveira, President of the Municipality of Câmara, had the building restored.

Now it shines in new splendour and is decorated with a bronze statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, in armour and with a sword.

The Archangel Michael is of course also mentioned in the Old Testament, which has been part of Christian teaching since the earliest times. In the Catholic scriptures Michael acts as the main opponent of evil and helps souls in their hour of death.

A very well-known "Prayer to Saint Michael" was introduced into official use by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 and even recommended by Pope John Paul II in 1994. And who would have thought it, there is even a day in the year which was dedicated to him, to be exact the Archangel Michael shares it with Gabriel and Raphael and the three celebrate so the 29th of September every year together, perhaps even in front.of the gates of the town hall...
