Did you ever follow the impulse to jump in your car and start driving without having a precise destination in mind? We did and two hours later, we ended up in Ottawa .
This happened a few months back, on a sublime late August Sunday. I've been meaning to write about it but never got the time as I had to download the photos from the phone to the computer at first.
We had an amazing day! I could not believe that it was still hot outside! We loved it!
I was surprised to find free parking downtown Ottawa, close by the Parliament. You won't see this in Montreal! As soon as we parked the car, kids grabbed their scooters and we all headed towards the Parliament buildings.
They had lots of fun going on this pedestrian street. I think it was called Albert if I am not mistaken.
There were many places to rest in the shade, enjoy a cold drink, play a game or listen to some live music.
This street performer we listened to was really good! His amazing voice captivated us and got us hooked for close to half an hour!
Right before reaching the Parliament we stopped to have some delicious hot dogs, as only in Ottawa you can find. There were plenty of food carts selling hot dogs, poutine, sandwiches and sodas, right across the Parliament.
Kids were fascinated by the Olympic flame burning in front of the Parliament.
We didn't take a guided tour because we have done it in one of our previous visits to Ottawa.
On the Parliament's steps, a protest against genocide was just about to start. We noted a reporter from CTV talking with some of the protesters.
While the children enjoyed riding their scooters around the building, we loved the spectacular views. From the back of the Parliament building we were able to see the river and the lower part of the city.
The kids were convinced that the queen was living in there since there were so many castles.
They were enchanted by her imposing statue as well as by Brown's one.
On the way back we noticed Terry Fox' statue and read about his story.
The gargoyles on the buildings got me intrigued.
The royal emblems, the horse and the lion looked gorgeous!
On our way to the car we passed by this banner which was hanging form a street pole.
In the window of a souvenir shop there was this Canadian mounty uniform dressing a loon. I guess you can't get more Canadian than that!
In a nutshell, we had a blast hanging around in Ottawa for a few hours. How did you spend your Sunday? Did you do anything fun?
