Weherahena is a popular temple among Buddhists. The story of the temple here, though of no historical significance, is quite interesting. The devol in the temple is said to be the largest and the first underground temple in the world.

The dagoba in the temple, not a big one. It mean Weherahena temple not historical oldest one. Also couldn't find any oldest characteristic after walked around temple with ma daughter. Middle of the dagoba made swans designs and the Buddhist flag showing.

We saw an artificial pond with waterproof, slightly elongated, lotus flowers when they made recently. My daughter stayed over 15 minutes there with watching waterproof.

These lotus flower's design perfectly created from mason who was attended to built temple. Lotus flowers and sign very close to Buddhism. Some of small shops built in front of the temple for sell lotus and other flowers for worship to Lord Buddha.

Before entered to the underground temple, I discovered some of the paintings made of the side hall. I felt very sad feelings after saw above painting like some of destroyed others. The murals are being destroyed as parts of the wall escape. It is the responsibility of the temple donation committee to preserve these.

Lot of wall paintings show big meaning to humans. Buddhists believe Karma progress. So we're trying to do good works to the community for reduce our sin. Because sin isn't good our next spirit. Buddhist believe next spirits and continuously born after death until to reach Nibbana.

I couldn't observed above painting's meaning and who were stayed there. Seems like worriers. But Sri Lanka Buddhist history hadn't any wars from worriers. In this place staying some guide person for explain some stories of the paintings who're asking about it. Unfortunately I couldn't found any explaining person when I reached that time.

The Weherahena Poorvarama Rajamaha temple in Matara is the largest Buddhist shrine in the country. Located on the Kekanadura Road in Matara, the founder of this temple is the monk Rev. Paravahera Revatha.

This creation recalls how five other Buddhist monks, including the Mihindu Arahants, who introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka, preached to King Devanampiyatissa. Behind the Arhat some deer running around.

Top of the underground temple painted bunches of the lotus flowers designs. I previously said Lotus flowers very close sign to Buddhism. So no wonder why old people created lotus flowers.

We climbed upstairs through underground. After came second flood I looked another destroyed painting on the wall. I believe authority of the temple will take big action for preserve these paintings. If not our next generation's will miss to see brilliant creations.

That's different painting I looked this temple. But very common for Sri Lankan Buddhism. The lord Buddha preached some Dhamma to someone. Every stories explained from sinhala language using some titles.

Surrounding area so awesome with beautiful green environment. There are so many areas covered from paddy fields. There are more farmers I have seen behind the temple. The temple's founder came to Veherahena empty-handed. Weherahena at that time had only half an acre of land. Upon arriving here, Revatha Thero found only half a jungle.

The monk cleared the jungle and built a small monastery with the help of the local people. Having spent some time there, he commenced work on the construction of the Weherahena Rajamaha temple.
