Probably one of Thailand's most beautiful temples: Wat Thung Setthi

March 2018 · 3 min read · Khon Kaen Province

Do you like traveling off the beaten path? To a place where you will most likely not see any other tourist? To a temple that is really unique and very different from the other temples in Thailand? Then you should visit this amazing place!

A very special temple: Wat Thung Setthi

Wat Thung Setthi is located approximately 15 minutes away from Khon Kaen city in the region of E-San. The E-San is the northeastern part of Thailand that is close to Laos and Khon Kaen is one of the biggest and most important cities of this region. It also has an airport with connections from Bangkok and other cities in Thailand.

The first thing that you will probably think when you see this temple is: 'is this really a temple?'. It's very unusual for a Thai Buddhist temple and it looks rather like a palace than a temple building.

Mickey Mouse in a Buddhist temple?

Not only the exterior of the temple is different, also inside you will get a surprise that you would never expect. Can you believe that in addition to Buddha and Hindu gods, you will also find images of Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader and other famous characters in the window panes? This is no joke. Actually, I don't know why these characters are there but this is very interesting and next time I will ask somebody or let my girlfriend ask the local people.

Of course this is still a place of worship, hence in the middle of the temple there is a big Buddha statue. This Buddha, however is completely black, which is also a quite uncommon thing in Thai temples. But it's very beautiful.

Welcome to hell

Not only the building and the surrounding area with an artificial lake and elephant statues is worth a visit. A few minutes away from the main temple building, passing some green rice paddies, there is a garden with many statues that show you what happens if you violate the 5 Buddhist precepts called Silas (no killing, no stealing, no lying, no intoxicating drinks or drugs, no sexual misconduct).

This is for all you liars and scammers out there! 'Som Nam Na' as you would say in Thai :))

This is indeed something that you can find also in other Buddhist Theravada temples in Thailand. Even in Cambodian temples I saw this kind of odd thing.

Have a great weekend, Steemians! If you enjoyed reading this, I would be happy about your upvote, resteem or follow.
