Playa Pelada, Costa Rica - That time I wanted to build a hostel

Playa Guiones

After arriving in Costa Rica quite unexpectedly (read about it here), I decided to explore the country a bit and see where I ended up at. The cousin of, - what would become - my girlfriend at the time, took me along with a colleague of his, on a trip to Guanacaste. They had work to do in the area of Playa Guiones. After setting out from Grecia (central Costa Rica) in their 4x4 and driving for a few hours, we eventually ended up at a dirt road. My Spanish was very weak at the time (it still isn't amazing by the way), so it was hard for me to actually know where we were going, until all of a sudden we're right on this huge beach, with noone else anywhere in sight.

Welcome to Playa Guiones. The second beach I had seen in Costa Rica, and I already found myself at one of the more beautiful beaches I had ever seen in my life. After having lived in Costa Rica for a while I realized, this was just the tip of the iceberg of what the country had to offer beach- and otherwise though. Like the cousin said, that beach was mediocre at best. Can you imagine how good the beaches in your country are if the beach shown in above video is mediocre?!

Playa Pelada

After leaving Guiones behind us, we went to the nearest beach to where we were staying for the week -, Playa Pelada. During my six months stay in Costa Rica there were quite a few spots that really managed to catch my breath. This was one of the first I found. This tiny beach is located in a small bay between the bigger Playa Guiones and Playa Nosara. With lush vegetation along the coastal line, a small makeshift bar next to the beach, waterholes in the rocky part of the beach and beautiful golden sand for the rest -, I think it's fair to say it's one of those places that feel like paradise on earth.

I was so taken a aback by the beauty of the place, that after having been there for little under a week I started looking for the possibility of starting a hostel right there. At the time, I hadn't even planned for staying in Costa Rica, I didn't have any plans going onward really. Whilst the land was relatively cheap, I had only just turned twenty-one, and had not enough financial capabilities, let alone knowledge of the country to make it viable. So, I didn't pursue the idea. Now, almost four years later, it is still one of many things on my bucket list -, among other crazy ideas like sailing across the Atlantic, but that's another story.
