Hey Steemians,

The spring is here, the temperatures are warmer again and below about 1500 meters altitude, most of the snow has already melted. That's why I of course was delighted that I was able to start this year's via ferrata session last weekend. Finally back to climbing the walls and enjoy the beautiful view of the mountains in the bright warm sunshine. 🌄 ☀

One of the few fixed rope routes my nearby area that is already open and accessible (snow-free) is the Känzele in Bregenz on Lake Constance. A nice and short via ferrata, which you can master even after work if you live nearby. Like last year, I started my entry into the climbing session there, maybe this will become a tradition for me... Who knows... 😋

The area Känzele is a very popular area for many climbers or boulderers in the area. With over 130 different climbing routes, there is something for everyone between difficulty levels 2 and 10+. There are also three different via ferrata variants from B/C to D/E. The last and heaviest variant (D/E) was completed and opened in April of this year. 👍

Starting point for the via ferrata above Bregenz is the parking lot at the castle ruins Hohenbregenz on the Gebhardsberg. Here is also a castle restaurant and an old pilgrimage chapel, which seems to be a very popular place for weddings. Every time I was there and wanted to make a short visit to the castle, there was a wedding. The view from here above the Lake Constance, to the beautiful Alps and the three-country view (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) is really something breathtaking. 🏰 😊

From the parking lot to the entry of the via ferrata you go for about 30 minutes along the advertised hiking trail. So a really pleasant and short approach. The best season for the via ferrata is my opinion in spring or autumn. Since the Känzele is a south-facing wall, the heat quickly accumulates here in summer. Also on this weekend, where we had according to weather report around 25 degrees, it was very hot on the wall. ☀ 😓

At the beginning of the via ferrata I decided to go first the easier route (B/C). After 20 minutes I was a bit surprised when I reached the top. As already written above, a short but beautiful via ferrata. 😄 However, I remembered a longer climbing time from the last few times here. So I thought to go down again and climb the next and heavy variant afterward. 😊 On the descent, i took a cool down on a small waterfall, before it goes on the trail to the entrance again. 🌊

After the second round I enjoyed the beautiful nature on the Gebhardsberg and went a bit later on the Pfänder, which I will report you the coming days.
A wonderful start into the via ferrata session. I'm looking forward to this weekend.
So far, the plan is to drive to a via ferrata along a waterfall in Austria.

Yeeehaa 👍 😋

I hope you liked my little contribution about my start in the climbing session. Do you also like climbing or hiking in the mountains? Leave me a comment below. 😉

PS: Many via ferrata are still officially closed, either because of avalanche danger, because they are not yet snow free or for nature/animal welfare reasons. Here is a list of via ferratas who are already open, if you are interested. 😉
