Outdoor painting on Cyprus or when you forgot the camera

May 2018 · 3 min read · Cyprus

I put brushes and watercolors in my travel bag. You will be surprised and say how you can draw in Cyprus, because there is already something to get another fun. Yes, I also doubted that I could find time to paint there.

Well, I am on Cyprus. I am going to the sea. Then I,m going to the bar, taking a pint of fine local beer. Suddenly the ringtone of my smartphone sounds - I received SMS

A message from my former teacher of architecture. He is wondering if I went on a vacation by chance. And he asked am I on Cyprus? Wow!
From the chat, I find out that he, too, is resting in Cyprus in a nearby town. Wen he passed troug by bus he saw me going to the beach.
That's how it happens, you live next to a good person and meet him once in 20 years. But you should go somewhere very far, and there you will certainly meet your neighbor on the desk, the first love, the mayor of your city and so on...

We meet and try the local red wine with discussing the events of the past years. In conversation it turns out that my former teacher also took watercolors and he has already done several sketches!

So, it is decided, we are going to paint together in the morning!

After breakfast we go to the picturesque hill. However, we are,nt waiting for surprises in the form of scorching sun, spines and ants.

The first two points I was able to solve. But the ants pestered me mercilessly. The teacher was badly hit by the burning sun.

I appeal to amateurs who use the copying of photos. Try at least once to paint in nature, try to fight with ants, with prickles))))

At the same time, we come to the conclusion that the first etude failed (to anyone of us) and decide to change the place for next attempt.
We move to the center of the city and find a beautiful historical monument in the form of an ancient monastery.

I really like the frame with the bell tower. I sit down straight on the rocks and quickly sketch out the outlines of the picture...

Hey, you, photo copying master... can you leave the comfortable home chair? can you draw sitting on the rocks?

The tourists visiting the monastery with great interest watch as we draw. One tourist jokes:
--- That's what happens when you forgot your Cannon. :-)

I quickly realize the main problem. In this heat watercolor quickly dries. But despite the difficulties I'm trying to give the picture a finished look.

This is not the most successful watercolor, but I'm glad that I picked up the brush again!
