Christmas in London, the UK

The year is already 2023 and I am just now writing a blog about my trip at the end of last year.

I was really busy at the end of last year and was not able to update my blog on HIVE.　There were many things happening at the end of the year, both in my work and in my personal life.　One of the most memorable events that happened at the end of the year was this trip to London.　It was the first time for me to visit London during the Christmas season, and the whole town was decorated with Christmas lights, which was really pretty.

When I was living in Osaka, I had no idea that I would come to London so often. I had never been interested in the UK as a tourist destination, only hoping to visit someday. （But after I came to live in Europe, I started to visit the U.K. for various reasons. I have not done much sightseeing yet, but when I went to London this time, I was able to do some sightseeing because it was the Christmas season.

I was told by my friend in London that we should go to a Christmas market since we are here during the Christmas season after all! I decided to go to the Christmas market as soon as possible after all of our work is done. I was told that every year a giant Christmas tree is given to the UK as a gift from Norway, and that it is displayed in the square. So, as someone who currently lives in Scandinavia, I decided to go there to see the gift from Scandinavia.

The bronze lion statue in this plaza is said to be modeled after the lion in the Mitsukoshi department store in Japan, and I was excited to see the lion that is familiar to Japanese people.　To be honest, the Christmas market was smaller than I expected, but the square was really beautiful and the Christmas tree, a gift from Norway, was really big, beautifully lit, and a sight to behold.

We then walked towards Piccadilly Circus.　This is Times Square in NYC, and in front of Shinjuku Alta in Tokyo. This place really feels like a dynamic mass of energy anytime I come here. That day, Croatia had won a game in the World Cup, so people in Croatia uniforms were taking commemorative photos.　Congratulations Croatia!

I knew London would be an interesting city no matter how many times I went there! I would like to visit again, this time taking my time just for sightseeing.

クリスマスシーズンにロンドン行ってきた

年が明けて、すでに２０２３年になっているのですが昨年末の旅行のブログを今頃書いています。

昨年末は本当に忙しくて、HIVEでブログを更新することがなかなかできませんでした。　仕事にプライベートにとやはり年末はいろんなことがありました。　年末に起きた出来事で印象に残っているのが、このロンドンへの旅行でした。　クリスマスシーズンにロンドンに行くのは初めてで、町全体がクリスマスのイルミネーションで飾られていて本当にきれかったです。

大阪に住んでいた時は自分がこれほど再々ロンドンに来るようになるとは考えもしませんでした。英国にはいつか旅行で行けたらいいなぁ程度で観光としてあまり興味がなかった国でした。（イギリス人の皆さんごめんなさい）　それが、欧州に住むようになってからいろんな理由で英国によく行くようになりました。あまり観光はまだしたことが無いのですが、今回ロンドンに行った際はクリスマスシーズンと言うこともあって、少し観光もできました。

ロンドンの友人にやっぱりクリスマスシーズンに来たんだから、やっぱりクリスマスマーケットには行ったほうがいいよ！とアドバイスをしてくれて、早速クリスマスマーケットに行ってみることにしました。その広場には、毎年ノルウェーから英国に大きなクリスマスツリーがプレゼントとして贈られそれが飾られていると言っていました。そこで、現在北欧に住んでいるものとして、やっぱりその北欧からのプレゼントを見てみようと思い行ってみることにしました。

この広場にあるライオンの銅像は日本では三越デパートのライオンのモデルになっているらしく、日本人にもおなじみのライオンが見れるともあって、わくわくしながらいきました。　クリスマスマーケットは正直言って思ったより小さかったのですが、広場は本当にきれいで何といってもノルウェーからのプレゼントであるクリスマスツリーは本当に大きくて美しくライトアップもされていて見ごたえがありました。

その後はピカデリーサーカスに向かって歩いていきました。　ここはNYCでいうところのタイムズスクエアであって、東京でいうところの新宿アルタ前です。ここは本当にいつ来てもダイナミックなエネルギーの塊のような雰囲気を感じます。その日はワールドカップでクロアチアが試合に勝ったこともあって、クロアチアのユニフォームを着た人たちが記念写真を撮っていました。　クロアチアおめでとう！
