Sinop Prison and its history

Sinop Prison is a high place of nematism, covered with sea on three sides. It was used as a castle when it was first built. This castle was built by the Seljuks on 1214 AD. This fortress, which is used for protection purposes, protects and strengthens them by hosting Greek, Pontus, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman houses.

Sinop Prison, which was used for fortress and protection purposes until 1568, proved to be used as a prison for the first time in old historical documents. It was in 1887 that this was officially a prison. Veysel Pasha, who is Sinop Possessor, added new buildings to this castle and also built a bath, but in 1979 the rebellion was finally burnt. This two-storey U-shaped ward was also built in 1939 with a two-story, nine-warded children's ward.

Sinop Prison, known as "Alcatraz of Anatolia" at the time, was completely closed down by the Ministry of Culture in 1999 and turned into a museum. Sinop Prison, poets, artists, writers have seen and hosted many tarihe witnesses. Sinop Prison is a place especially famous for its high walls. 11 bastions, 22 and 18 meters high, and 3 meters thick walls with no birds flying from this place nor anyone escaped. In this place where even the birds can not fly away, 2 people tried to escape from the canal, while the other was caught.

Sinop Prison has 28 wards and more than 300 cells consisting of 3 parts. In these areas, children are specially allocated to special wards, ladies and men. In addition to these, there are rooms, such as small gardens, cells, dungeons, various workshops, wards, large observation posts in important places, former prisoner transport, accounting, administrative building, infirmary, prosecutor's room, old beds.

Sinop Prison has hosted many prisoners and has hosted important and famous people among these prisoners. In these names, Sabahattin Ali, one of the most important fathers, has been instrumental in writing his works for many years. Thanks to the 10th year of the Republic, he has come out with amnesty.
