[ENG] It’s been a long time that I visited Umbria last time. I remember that it happened at the end of 2018 and during my travel I stopped with my girlfriend a couple of days in Spoleto. Probably this town is not the most famous in the central area of Italy, because there are also other amazing places like Assisi, Perugia and Orvieto, but I think that it is a city that all the people should visit if they are passing in this region.
In this post I will explain you what Spoleto has of great and in particular where you can go if you are there for a short period.

Mi ricordo che è stato alla fine dell'anno 2018 e durante il mio viaggio mi fermai con la mia fidanzata un paio di giorni a Spoleto. Probabilmente questa città non è la più famosa nella zona centrale dell'Italia, dato che ci sono altri luoghi sensazionali come Assisi, Perugia and Orvieto, ma credo che sia una città che tutte le persone dovrebbero visitare se passano da questa regione.

Spoleto is an amazing city in Umbria: the History of this place started a lot of time ago, when during the Prehistorical Bronze Age the first human beings started to civilize these hills. Today we have a lot of archaeological finds that the scientists discovered under the city.
However the Roman Empire was probably the most important period for the growth of the city: from this point of view the Roman theatre is the older symbol of Spoleto and it is inside of the downtown. During the Middle Ages it was buried by waste materials and in particular by the church that was built upon that. The priests did not have enough space inside of the walls and so they decided to cover the theatre and expand their abbey. Clergy and churches had a main role for this town: Assisi and other places in Umbria was very important for Catholic religion and here we can find a lot of places of worship built in a few centuries. Probably the most relevant church is the Cathedral that is dedicated to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The style of this building is unique and it is a great example of the Romanesque architecture: the mosaic in the front side was made in 1207 and it is probably the signature of this amazing abbey.

Just outside of the old walls of Spoleto there is a special castle, built at the top of a hill: it is Albornoziana Fortress. This building had the role to defend all the area from the enemies of Papal States: Pope and Clergy had the control of this region and the central part of Italy for a lot of years and they needed to protect every place from Medici coming from the North and Borbone from the South. This fortress had a strategic role because near to it there was (and there is also today) the aqueduct: a crucial element for the survival of a city.
Appena fuori dalle antiche mura di Spoleto c'è un castello speciale, costruito sulla cima di una collina: è la Rocca Albornoziana. Questo edificio aveva il ruolo di difendere l'intera area dai nemici dello Stato Pontificio: il Papa ed il clero ebbero il controllo di questa regione e la parte centrale dell'Italia per molti anni ed avevano bisogno di proteggere ogni luogo dai Medici provenienti da nord e dai Borbone da sud. Questa Rocca ebbe un ruolo strategico perché vicino ad essa vi era (e c'è ancora oggi) l'acquedotto: un elemento cruciale per la sopravvivenza della città.

Every building in Spoleto hides something of amazing: an historical church, a modern restaurant, a square or another great site where you can know the great mix between the past and the present. This town was born a lot of time ago, but it is still growing and charming a lot of tourists. Spoleto is a magic place where you and feel yourself in the Middle Ages and at the same time you can know the cuisine of this place: wild boar, mushrooms, wine and other amazing dishes are the typical food of Umbria and here they are at their top level.
Ogni edificio a Spoleto nasconde qualcosa di grandioso: una chiesa storica, un moderno ristorante, una piazza o un altro grande luogo dove puoi conoscere il grande mix tra il passato ed il presente. Questa città è nata molto tempo fa, ma sta crescendo ancora ed attraendo molti turisti. Spoleto è un luogo magico dove puoi sentirti nel Medioevo ed allo stesso tempo puoi conoscere la cucina di questo luogo: cinghiale, funghi, vino ed altri magnifici piatti sono il cibo tipico dell'Umbria e qui sono espressi al massimo livello.
