Pozzo Etrusco di Perugia - A city of modern and ancient mysteries

April 2021 · 3 min read · Perugia

A skyline like no other, a giant pearl on top of hill, Perugia is a wonderfully mysterious place. I had not many ideas on what to expect before visiting this place, the capital city of the Umbria region it's not one of those well know italian destinations. It's more like a shyguy that dosen't like too much too be talked about and for some things that I have come to know after my time there I understend why.

But let's start from the arrival.

The view of the city from one of the highest place, red roofs swarming the hilltop and the towering churches

For walking around the city you have to be prepared because it's not your common flat river city, here we are on hill and some inner roads feels like hiking around. There are tunnels and entrance that take you to an older part of the city that seems like a medieval dungeon, I remember imagining like the perfect place for culprits of crimes and shadow maneuverings to meet and talk about the details of their plans. But let's leave this aside for this time.

Let’s walk into the Etrurian arc

Other then crimes and sneaking mysteries Perugia is a beautiful city, one that is full of culture and some of the best university circuit in Italy. And is a really old human settlement. Through this Etrurian Arc 300 A.C. (or Augusto in the name of the roman emperor that rebuilt it in 40 A.C.) let's dwelve in a place that was active well before the years 0 of the occidental calendar.

There are many walls and structure that survive still to these days built by the Etrurian people but the one that impressed me the most was the Etrurian Well for sure, I'll let the images talk for a bit.

The giant structure of the well, walking in there was really impressive. Especially if you think that this engineering feat was realized more then 2000 years ago.

It was a breathtaking walk, for the imagery and for the humid and chilling atmosphere (wich was an appreciated relief, that August the weather was really hot). A wonderful and ancient engineering work that I reccomend to visit toghether with the other parts of this peculiar hilltop gem!
