The Padma River

July 2020 · 2 min read · Dhaka Division

The mighty Padma started at Kushtia district and empty into the bay of Bengal by merging with Meghna River at Chandpur. The water distribution of Padma controversially controlled at west Bengal in India by the Farakka Barrage the results is flood of each year. The barrage keep the water during dry season and open its gates during rainy season and eroder more than 250 square miles last 50 years in Bangladesh.

People living both bank become poor to poorer years after years as they lost their lands. The current example of the dangerous Padma during rainy season is the Padma Multipurpose Bridge project, which has been affected by errosion yesterday. Lot of expensive materials kept at the construction yard lost forever in the river as the authority couldn't able to move them by the mechanical caranes.

I wish people of the world obeyed the international law and made justice. The world's largest mangrove forest "Shundarbans" also affected as the reduced waterfowl allows saltwater enter towards the sweet water at the forest area.

Day before yesterday I was on the way to Barishal and I had to cross the mighty Padma River. It is really dangerous and I found water was over flowing and village after village gone under water due to the overflowed water of the river.

Visit this river always exciting! I've tried to capture the current situation of 120 kilometre long Mighty Padma. It is wide 4 to 8 kilometers and the part I was crossing called Mawa took around 20 minutes by a speed boat.

Do you know this is the National River of Bangladesh and the deepest part is around 479 meters made it of of the deepest river of the world.
