At the edge of the ocean

At the edge of the ocean

April 2018 · 3 min read · Sakhalin Oblast

On the first day, when we flew to Kunashir, we had little time left. Things are thrown in the hostel. Meeting with the staff of the reserve also passed quickly. And in the evening we made our first excursion on the island.

It was very close to go - literally several hundred meters. The cape, which extends toward the Pacific Ocean, ends in an old tower. Now this is the only outstanding building. But earlier there was a fortified area, which was equipped with Japanese troops. Here trenches were dug up, gun turrets were installed.

Passing by you can see the remains of rotary mechanisms in the ground: huge gears. In the tower and around it, too, a lot of worn-out remains of various devices. But most, including the ceilings and stairs, have almost completely collapsed. At least climb up there is clearly not safe.

But if you turn back, you can see the city itself against the background of volcanoes rising in the distance. In the morning and in the evening it is a very beautiful sight. Given the weather features of the Kuriles, you can see this all not every day. Dense fogs close the city too often, and can stay for days or even weeks. Even the locals note that in this respect the place where South Kurilsk is one of the most unsuccessful on the island. But the first few days we were lucky with the weather - it was warm and sunny.

Despite the fact that the city is very close, here on the cape it is very easy to feel at the edge of the world. After all, only the ocean is ahead, and the sound of the waves absorbs all other sounds. It was with great pleasure that I came here the next morning at dawn. Soft light, dew and lots of flowers around. They say that at certain times of the year here on the promontory you can see marine mammals.

All the same, Kunashir really is on the very edge of the Pacific Ocean. And this territory is more of nature than mankind. This is clearly understood when you see how plants absorb the traces of people's activities. It was true that nature was resting that evening. It was warm, and calm. And only a lone crow posed for me.
