When you think of a city or town you will picture some iconic building, monument or bridge.
Lucerne is famous Swiss town and probably the first thing that comes up in mind is the wooden bridge - The Chapel Bridge, considered the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe.
The bridge was built in 14th century, it is 204 m long . The tall construction is octagonal Water tower once being a fortification.
Follow me to reach the bridge and walk inside it.
Numerous birds were paddling on the river Reuss - swans, gulls...
My friends admiring the paintings inside the bridge. The paintings date back in 17th century and follow the events from town's history.
More birds diving.
As the river flows through the town there are more bridges to cross from one side to the other. The architecture is outstanding and incorporated beautifully with the scenery.
The stunning white building on the hill overlooking the old town is Hotel Chateau Guetsch, originally built in 1888 and inspired by the Bavarian castle Neuschwanstein.
Neuschwanstein castle is the logo of Disney. Now you can recall it.
The colourful flower band alongside the bridge and me posing in front of them. Mind you that was 10 years ago....
And together with my friend Julia.
We had a snack in Rathaus Brauerei restaurant, located near the Chapel bridge alongside the river bank. For beer lovers this place got its own brewery inside. Hence its name.
Speaking about restaurants in Lucerne you cannot miss the painted facade of Restaurant Fritschi.
Another painted house, one of many you will encounter there.
The old Lucerne got hidden gems that you need more than a day to discover them. We had limited time and we have planned boat trip.
Before we continue our journey by boat on the lake Lucerne let me show you a couple of images.
As you may guess these are not digital photos. :-) My friend shared with me some of her photos on hard copy which I scanned with my phone. They give that vintage look. After all it was some time ago.
We were about to board a small boat near that fountain and to have a trip from Lucerne to Vitznau and back. See the map below.
The lake is surrounded by picturesque mountains and the view from the boat is more than delightful. I can't stop repeating myself but if you visit Switzerland you will understand how everything is outstanding in this country.
The name of the lake in German is Vierwaldstättersee, or "Lake of the Four Forested Settlements". It is called as such because it is surrounded by the four cantons of Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden and the canton of Lucerne. Same meaning in French "lac des Quatre-Cantons" and Italian: "lago dei Quattro Cantoni*. It is the fourth largest in the country. Source - Wikipedia.
Just look at this serenity.
The trip was absolutely fabulous and relaxing. Watching the mountain range and the calm waters I wished this journey never to end.
