Beaches of Rio de Janeiro: Copacabana and Ipanema

August 2018 · 2 min read · Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, is considered by many people one of the most beautiful cities in the world for its breathtaking geographical location and the landscape that surrounds the city. In this post I show some photos that I took during my last trip to this wonderful city (the Brazilians call it “Cidade Maravilhosa”). It is the main touristic destination not only of South America, but also of the souther hemisphere. Among its beaches, the most famous are Capacabana and Ipanema.

This photo was taken in Copacabana beach, near the Fortress with this name. At the background of the image it can be seen a typical skyline of the landscape there. The famous mountain called Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar), which is an icon of Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore there are mountains that produce an interesting layering effect in the image.

Near the Copacabana Fortress there is a place called “Vila dos Pescadores” (Fishermen’s Village), which is cooperative of fishermen. They keep their small boats and nets there. And during some days of the week, they sell the fish that were captured. In this photo, the frame used to dry and clean the nets I used it to framed the "Sugarloaf".

Very near this place, there is this sculpture of the singer Dorival Caymmi; in his songs the beach and the see was a common theme. One of his most well known songs was “Sábado em Copacabana”.

Other very famous beach of Rio de Janeiro is Ipanema, they are separated by a sort of small peninsula, call Arpoador. From there I took the following photos of Ipanema.

These photos show the skyline formed by these iconic mountains. They mountain of the left is called Pedra da Gávea. The contiguous mountains are called Morro Dois Irmãos (“Two Brothers”), because they look like twins.

This photo in black and white format shows Ipanema beach, with the silhouette of these mountains and the skyline of the buildings of the city and the mist of sea on the coast.

All the photos were taken by myself with a Sony DSC-R1.
