This lovely park is located in the Redlands Shire, in South East Queensland, right next door to Brisbane. Traditionally known as Quandamooka Country, there were 3 tribes of Aboriginal people, who have lived in this area for approximately 21,000 years. I believe the name Capalaba comes from the Aboriginal word for Ring Tailed Possum, a tree dwelling marsupial native to the area. We often see them scurrying along the power lines in the early evenings on our walks.
I took this photo not too long ago on a typical Queensland winter morning. Weekly parkrun events have been held in the park since 2014. I remember running at the very first event, though I ran somewhat faster than I seem to run nowadays ;)
There is plenty of parking and a clean toilet block, as well as heaps of water fountains and a series of BBQ's for all sizes of social gatherings.
We are subject to tropical downpours during our summer season. I remember showing up at the park even though I knew parkrun had been cancelled and tried to go for a run anyway. I had to do a slightly modified course and got pretty wet feet, but I still got my five kilometres in!
There are extensive cycling paths covering the entire park. The local council have done a fantastic job of linking them up with other cycling paths which now stretch across multiple suburbs in our local area.
While it's normal for me to see ducks and other bird life each time I visit this park, I'm always on the lookout for other interesting wildlife. Even though I've never seen one here, this park is part of the Koala Conservation Area, but I have seen koalas along the cycle path that eventually joins this park.
Right near the start area of the weekly parkrun events is an extensive playground, with stuff for little, medium-sized and big kids. Some people, including my partner, climb on the equipment each time they turn up for parkrun. Some people just can't help themselves ;)
