King's Canyon Hike

After a night swagging under the stars, we were up before sunrise to do a hike around Kings Canyon, with some very interesting rock formations formed from a combination of water and wind erosion and colours coming from silicon and quartz in the sheer rock faces you see.

We weren't allowed to go closer than 2m to the edge otherwise we'd be off the tour! And likely off the cliff as well.

We saw fossilised water as well which is the ripples in the rock. The rounded half dome rocks on the top of the canyon are called "bungles". There is a sacred place on the walk called the Garden of Eden where a pool of water and tranquility exists (when there's not loads of chatting tourists around)!

Mount Connor & Lake Armadeus

Quick stop off at Fooluru aka Mount Connor which looks like a toothbrush lying on it's back with the bristles on the right side. It's actually a horse shoe shape and the Aborigines don't want to lay claim to it because the inside of the horse shoe never sees sunlight and it's believed that's where the evil spirits are.

Uluru (Ayers Rock)

Here is the highlight of this trip in glorious sunset - Uluru. In geological terms it's a giant rock formed during the time the ocean that existed here dried up and formed. What you see above ground is 1/3, the other 2/3 are underground!

It of course has a significant cultural history with the Aborigines as we'll find out more about tomorrow but you can't help and be totally mesmerised by its awe. Every angle providing a different view point. Every minute the sun went down, it changed colour from glowing orange-brown to dark terra-cotta. Amazing place.

A couple more days out in the desert but I'm definitely not sleeping outside again! It was minus 1 Celsius haha!

Catch you soon and as always take it easy!
