Today is Sunday and my husband and I decided to take advantage of a magnificent offer valid in various civic museums in Tuscany, with completely free access for today only. A museum that I have wanted to visit for a long time is the Museo del Ceppo located in the magnificent site of the ancient hospital surmounted by the famous Robbiano frieze about which I wrote a post that I share here to refresh your memory:

The museum is easily accessed from the pergola and as soon as we enter we are delighted by a simple room with various interactive installations dedicated to the famous frieze where you can delve deeper into individual aspects of it and also review how it was restored.

After looking at the interactive parts and information on the frieze we headed towards the heart of the museum, the old hospital. The first thing we visited was the anatomy theatre, a small structure near the main complex where doctors could witness operations or autopsies, in fact as you enter you are immediately struck by the marble table placed in the center but also by the cold of the place. Then you immediately notice the ceiling which I found magnificent, rich in art, almost bucolic, wonderful. And obviously in the theater there are steps where students sat to observe autopsies and operations. A truly special and fascinating place.

Then we returned to the main room, a huge hall with many pink hospital beds which have now been transformed into display cases, each of which contains various medical instruments divided by type, such as ancient catheters or instruments for crushing intimate stones in urology, various forceps in gynaecology, hacksaws , chisels and similar in orthopaedics, scalpels in surgery, instruments for bloodletting, scrapers for already deceased fetuses in obstetrics etc... I must say that many medical instruments which were certainly very cutting edge for the time (end of the 19th century) nowadays can almost seem like torture instruments. There is also an interesting wheelchair with iron wheels and obviously next to each tool there is an accurate description of why it was used.

The final part of the room is dedicated to mental health, there is a screen that projects scenes from a documentary film dedicated to one of the most sadly famous mental asylums in the city, Le ville Sbertoli and reminds us of the old and terrifying laws in force for mental health, laws that led the sick to be marginalized, ghettoized and stigmatized. At the end there is also an old device for electronic convulsive therapy, electroshock, it's scary just to look at it. Once the room is finished we immerse ourselves in a small corridor with a somewhat disturbing "Doll" which however was used to train aspiring midwives so despite having a less than reassuring air it was certainly useful, finally we arrive at the last room, a room which does not it has a lot to do with the hospital but which was the old doctors' offices, where valuable paintings, particular objects, ancient medical books and a series of urns are still preserved, here you can read the biography of the doctors of the hospital hospital and a medical text in Latin. It takes about two hours to visit this museum, personally it is one of the most interesting I have ever visited, the old instruments are really fascinating even if they have a slightly macabre air and the museum is well structured making the whole visit interesting!
