This simple hack is great for your health when traveling!

September 2021 · 2 min read · Hong Kong

Here’s one easy travel hack that’ll help prevent sickness while traveling. If you’re eating at a restaurant that might have questionable sanitation, this tip will help you out. I learned in Hong Kong (which already has comparatively clean restaurants ) that there’s 1 simple custom designed for maximum cleanliness. This custom is going to increase your health and keep you happy and safe while traveling.

Rinse your utensils in tea! What?! Many restaurants will provide a large oversized bowl which is used for this purpose. I didn't realize how smart it was that till I saw this.

This is a cleaning bowl. NOT soup.

The first pot of tea is usually designated for washing not drinking, as the first batch of fresh tea isn’t the best. The leaves need to seep. Historically this custom was created because roadside restaurants would get dusty utensils from traffic.  Now it’s a super duper handy for getting rid of excess bleach or washing detergent that might be left over on your utensils or cups. Rinse things in boiling hot tea! How simple and charming, and don’t worry you won’t be insulting the restaurant if you do. If you look around at the rest of the patrons you'll see them doing it too.

Things you learn while traveling! Stay safe, rinse those chopsticks off and have a great life! One day we'll all be running around traveling again, and I for one will be in Hong Kong again.
