Great Local Restaurant: Izakaya Toyo

January 2020 · 2 min read · Osaka Prefecture

In this post I’d like to recommend a great local restaurant in Osaka. It is an Izakaya called Toyo located in Kyobashi, Osaka, about 3-5 minutes on foot from Kyobashi station. Open from around 11 A.M., it is popular amongst Japanese and tourists, so you have to stand in line and wait for the staff to take you to your table.

** Please be careful. Having friends join you after getting a table is not permitted. You have to enter together.

This is a standing restaurant, and there are about 12 tables. If you can't get a private table, sometimes you can trade tables with other people.

I got a table near the kitchen, where I could see an old guy cooking tuna. He used his hands to cook over the flame. Wow! Doesn't he get burned?

I order a few dishes. I wanted to try tuna and other seafood, because this restaurant serves large portions for the price.

This dish is grilled tuna, but it tasted like pork. It was absolutely delicious. I loved it.

This is a one person tuna course. It comes with sea urchin eggs, tuna and salmon eggs. Look at the big, thick pieces of tuna. The other dish is crab meat and scallops with green onions.

My friend and I don't drink alcohol so I ordered oolong tea. They have an all you can drink course for 200 JPY.

If you come to Osaka and want to try real local food I highly recommend this place. The owner is very friendly, the price is reasonable and the portions are large.
