Exploring Japan - Eating Udon & Tempura in Wazuka, Kyoto

I ate so much udon when I was travelling Japan! haha Udon is a great dish and comes both hot and cold, but for some reason I prefer the hot version and always select it when eating out. I often find Japanese like the cooler version, especially during summer, but maybe that's something to do with the western culture since we often eat hot food for our main meals. I would say cold meals are usually reserved for lunch or breakfast.

When visiting Wazuka in Kyoto I stopped in a small shop on the side of the road. The building seemed like a normal house and I was greeted by a lovely old lady who asked me what I would like to eat. I picked the udon in hot broth and the egg as a side dish. It was really nice as everything was cooked fresh from inside her small homely kitchen.

I love these little places but they are becoming more difficult to find in the UK now. When I'm in Japan I can find a small restaurant or a cafe that serves delicious food that's home cooked. I think it's partly because big businesses are supported here which makes it difficult for independents to thrive. There's also something to be said about the older generation in Japan who run these 'mom and pop shops' as retirement jobs, so sometimes they are integrated in to their homes in a more rural area and they are able to work during the day. Here's a quick snap of my Udon dish, I hope to share some other foods that I sampled in Japan very soon! Have a great day.
