An End of Summer Trip Final - Our Cabin and A Stop on the Road Home

September 2019 · 3 min read

This is the final post about our little end of summer trip to the Columbia River Gorge area. Here are a couple links to the other posts for those that are interested.
Hood River
The Abbey

Trout Lake WA is a small community about 25 miles north of Hood River OR. It sets at the end of the Trout Lake Valley at the base of Mt Adams about 12 miles from the summit. The energy here is amazing and the scenery is nothing short of spectacular! The valley is a growing paradise where organic farms, ranches and dairies are many.

This trip to Trout Lake WA was a return visit for us to where we lived for about 2.5 years. While we loved the area, in the end it was just too isolated and remote for us. Also the winters could be quite harsh. Our last winter there we had 12 feet of snow. At one point during that time it became an almost daily task to don snow shoes and trek out to clear snow that had slid off the roof from the windows. I guess we all have our limits. :)

So I thought I would start with a view of the sunrise and Mt Adams. This was taken from part of the 10 acres that belonged to the Air B&B we stayed at.

A shot of the mountain by its self. It pretty much dominates the skyline in the town and valley.

Here are a couple shots looking back at the little one room cabin we stayed in.

This used to be a museum and it was still filled with antiques and gave you the impression you were in a early 20th century cabin (which it probably was).

Here are some shots of the inside. While it was quite rustic you still had plenty of modern conveniences... fridge, coffee maker, shower even TV if you wanted it.

I loved the re-purposing of old wood for the inside walls.

The working pot belly stove and the old ice box. Not to worry there was an actual electric mini-fridge for cold items. :)

The entrance to the bathroom.
The small white doors on the left contained the window screens. I thought that was an interesting design.

.
There was a shower in the bathroom but they had left the old (non working) deep tub. With what looks like a brick chimney there, it appears once you filled the tub with well water, there was a way to start a fire to warm the water.

As we headed home south on HWY 35 out of Hood River we made a stop at one of the many fruit stands in the area. This one is stop of many on the The Hood River Fruit Loop that traverses 35 miles of the Hood River Valley. To finish up, this will be mostly a visual feast of the things we saw this day. :)

A few views of Mt Hood from the grounds.

A collection of gourdes and squash.
