Painted Hills - Central Oregon

November 2019 · 2 min read

Hello everyone! These are some images from a trip we took in 2015 to Central Oregon. This was one of our many journeys to the area to see if we wanted to move there. We decided to take the long way home and swing through Mitchell Oregon and The Painted Hills nearby. Needless to say it was well worth the extra time and distance to take in the breath taking views that were waiting for us.

The colorful layers show the different geological eras of this ancient flood plain. It is one of three units that belong to the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

These photos were taken by me with a Samsung Galaxy S5 Active with some Lightroom post processing.

We followed the gravel road up to the first view point. This is a panorama I put together in Lightroom of the view looking east.

A couple views looking in a more westerly direction from the same view point.

A shot from the road as we ventured further into the monument.

Our next stop was going to be down by the reservoir for a short loop hike.

A shot of the trail and a look back down toward the reservoir. Some parts of the walk on this trail were like being on an alien planet. The different textures and colors were just amazing to see.

Unfortunately we were strapped for time and we didn't get to explore the monument as thoroughly as we would have liked. On the plus side, since we moved to Central Oregon we are now only a couple hours away from this magnificent place. A return trip is inevitable and I am looking forward to more exploration and taking more pictures with my DSLR. :)

Thanks for looking and enjoy your day!
