Tales of Sleeping Beauty Peak

Tales of Sleeping Beauty Peak

December 2019 · 4 min read

Hello all and welcome to a little tour of Sleeping Beauty Peak in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest near Trout Lake, Washington. My first encounter with Sleeping Beauty was in the late '70s or early '80s on a camping trip to Trout Lake. I will share some photos of the peak from the surrounding area and stories of some hikes to the top.

Here is a view of the peak, looking west at the sunset, from near the town of Trout Lake that shows how the peak received its name. It has the appearance of a woman lying down. You will have to excuse the blurriness of the shot, I recovered this image from a bricked SD card in my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone. :)

For those that might be struggling to see the lady laying down, here is a shot with some graphics added to show body, neck and face.

A shot looking north at Mt Adams. Sleeping Beauty can be seen at the lower right of the image. Taken in 2016 with my Nikon D3300.

The next two shots are from December of 2014 when I first moved to Trout Lake. I couldn't resist getting out to get a shot of the peak with some new snow stuck to it. Taken with an Apple Iphone 4S looking west.

Here is a shot from the north side looking south. Mt Hood in Oregon can be seen in the distance. I took this image in 2015 with my Samsung phone trying to find the path we hiked in the late '70s to get to the top. Unfortunately some of the road had become impassable in the nearly 40 years since I was last here.

2012 Early Morning Hike

The following shots are from another camping trip in 2012. This would be my second trip to the top. This time we drove to the normal trailhead and proceeded to start the 1.3 mile 1400 foot elevation gain journey to the top. All images taken with an Apple Iphone 4S.

A shot of the rising moon as we emerged from the forest and started the switchbacks and rock scramble to the top.

A view from the top looking north to Mt Adams about 11 miles away.

Me and my farmers tan watching the sunrise. :) Mt St Helens can be seen to the west in the background.

Another couple of shots of the moon on the way down.

Shots From the Top 2015

My last trip to the top (so far). :)

Here is a little pano I made in Lightroom from a couple of pics with my Samsung phone. You can see Mt Hood in the distance on the right side and the green area on the middle left is the Trout Lake Valley where I was living at the time. Quite a commanding view. I guess that is why there used to be a fire lookout up here. When I made my first trip up here in the '70s we went with a group of about 20 people. Some one tied about 50 feet of surveyor's ribbon on one of the old eye bolts from the lookout tower. Never heard 20 people get so quite watching that ribbon flutter in the breeze. Totally mesmerizing and mind expanding. :)

A look at some of the wildlife on the peak.

From what I understand this guy is a frequent visitor. You can also see the road to the trail head down below.

A little blurry but he turned to give us a quick look before laying down to sun himself.
