When the slogan Rome is mentioned, the first association that comes to mind is undoubtedly the Colosseum. In Poland, there is a saying "to be in Rome and not to see the Pope", but now, as a result of historical changes and a significant decline in the authority of the church, this saying should rather read "be in Rome and not see the Colosseum". So we had to go to this place to see this one of the new 7 wonders of the world.

We were approaching this gigantic building from the Venetian Square and it is probably the most popular road, but also the most interesting, because it leads through Via dei Fori Imperiali streets, elevated a few meters above the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum. The climate of ancient Rome, created as a result of a walk between ancient ruins, had its cumulative effect when we approached the colossal Colosseum. The outer wall is 48 meters high, consisting of three levels of ancient columns arranged in accordance with the so-called superposition of orders. The superposition of the order is to arrange three levels of columns, where the field row consists of Tuscan-style columns, on top of them are Ionic columns, and at the very top there are the most slender Corinthian-style columns. The entire elevation in ancient times was more than half a kilometer long. All this meant that up to 50,000 spectators could sit in the interior at the same time. Of course, the society of ancient Rome was hierarchical, so despite the fact that everyone could come to the shows that took place in the Colosseum, the lowest social classes could only sit on the last, highest rows. The higher a person's social position, the closer to the center of the arena a citizen could sit. Although, bearing in mind what kind of show was held in the Colosseum, I wonder if sitting in the lowest places is a good idea. Despite the fact that the Colosseum could hold up to 50,000 spectators, it took no more than 6 minutes for the viewer sitting at the top in the last row to leave the building.

The Colosseum was put into use in 80 CE. by the emperors Vespasian and Titus and was to be used to present gladiator fights, naumachias or hunting wild animals. Tradition says that the Colosseum was the site of the martyrdom of the first Christians, but more and more sources contradict this theory, and the real place of the killing of Christians was Nero's circus, located on the site where the Vatican Basilica is located today. The last games at the Colosseum were held in AD 528.

The building itself makes a great impression, but at present its surroundings are not very attractive. The first reason is the huge number of tourists that hang around there, and the even greater number of street vendors of all kinds of crap. Selfiestick, powerbanks, plastic gladiator helmets, wooden swords, miniature colosseum figures. There would be nothing wrong with the trade itself, if it were not for the intrusiveness of the sellers who asked all the tourists they met. The second disadvantage of the Colosseum area is the fact that in 2022 the entire area was excavated, as the extension of the third metro line was being built here.
