Trip to South America no. 68 Chile - Atacama

It's a bit of a shame, but January 16, 2020 was one of the most interesting days during our trip, and unfortunately we don't have any photos of it. It all started at the airport in Calama, where after we returned the rented car, we set off on a 750 km hitchhiking journey through the driest desert in the world. The journey could have been a bit shorter, but fearing that while driving some minor road, we might get stuck somewhere in the middle of the desert, we decided to choose the main roads, where the risk of dying from the sun's rays while hitching for many hours is much lower.

Trochę wstyd, ale 16 ‎stycznia ‎2020 to był jeden z najciekawszych dni podczas naszej wyprawy, a my niestety nie posiadamy z niego żadnego zdjęcia. Wszystko zaczęło się na lotnisku w Calamie, gdzie po tym jak oddaliśmy wypożyczone auto ruszyliśmy w liczącą 750km podróż autostopem przez najsuchszą pustynię na świecie. Podróż mogła być trochę krótsza, ale bojąc się tego, że jadąc jakaś podrzędną drogą nieszczęśliwie może zdarzyć się nam utknięcie gdzieś na środku pustyni postanowiliśmy wybierać główne drogi, gdzie ryzyko śmierci od promieni słonecznych podczas wielogodzinnego łapania stopa jest znacznie mniejsze.

The first point is we move from the Chilean mining capital of Calama towards Anftofagasta, and on the way we hope that we will somehow manage to see one of the largest opencast mines in the world belonging to the Polish KGHM mine, the Sierra Gorda mine. Due to the riots prevailing throughout Chile, we were unable to get to the mine, and since the mine is an opencast mine, one thing we could do was a huge heap and a large pipe leading water from the ocean necessary to obtain copper ore. Not too much and a bit disappointed, we went further towards the junction of the national road No. 25 with the national road No. 5. We caught a driver and continued our journey with optimism. Then something amazing happened! On the horizon we saw a convoy - lots of flashing lights and some oversized cargo. Our driver already knew what was going on, so he drove the car far, far to the side of the road, and it took me and Agatka a long time to get what was happening here. When the convoy was approaching us, this oversized load turned out to be three KOMATSU trucks. 8 meters high, 10 meters wide, it can carry 369 volumes of cargo in three copies. The worst thing about it all is that I recorded a video of this convoy with my mobile phone, which passes us at a really slow pace in the middle of the desert, but unfortunately the film was irretrievably lost along with my phone 2 months later in the Colombian metro...

Punkt pierwszy ruszamy z Chilijskiej stolicy górnictwa Calamy w kierunku Anftofagasty, a po drodze liczymy, że jakoś uda nam się zobaczyć jedną z największych odkrywkowych kopalni świata należącą do polskiego koncernu KGHM kopalnię Sierra Gorda. Na teren kopalni z uwagi na panujące w całym Chile zamieszki nie udało nam się dostać, a że kopalnia jest kopalnią odkrywkową to jedno co mogliśmy to była wielka hałda oraz wielka rura prowadząca wodę z oceanu niezbędną do pozyskania rudy miedzi. Nasz kierowca wiedział już o co chodzi, więc zjechał autem daleko, daleko na pobocze, a do mnie i Agatki dopiero po dłuższej chwil dotarło to co się tutaj właśnie dzieje. Gdy konwój zbliżał się do nas ten ponadgabarytowy ładunek okazał się trzema ciężarówkami KOMATSU. Wysoki na 8 metrów, szeroki na 10 metrów mogący przewieźć 369 tom ładunku i to w trzech egzemplarzach. Najgorsze w tym wszystkim jest to, że nagrałem telefonem komórkowym filmik na ten konwój iście żółwim tempem mija nas na środku pustyni, ale niestety film bezpowrotnie przepadał wraz z moim telefonem 2 miesiące później w kolumbijskim metro…

The next 500 kilometers of the Atacama road was quite monotonous. A typical desert landscape, only every few dozen kilometers we passed signs informing us that once on the left and on the right we pass either abandoned cities of saltpeter producers or rock pictograms that will appear more or less here and there in South American deserts, and their greatest accumulation located in the Peruvian Nazca.

Kolejne 500 kilometrów drogi przez Atacamę było dość monotonne. Typowy pustynny krajobraz, tylko co kilkadziesiąt kilometrów mijaliśmy tabliczki informujące nas o tym, że raz po lewej raz po prawej mijamy albo opuszczone miasta producentów saletry albo, skalne piktogramy które częściej lub rzadziej będą pojawiały się tu i ówdzie na południowoamerykańskich pustyniach, a ich największe nagromadzenie znajduje się w Peruwiańskim Nazca.

One hour before reaching our destination in the city of Arica, we suddenly started descending from the flat desert into some strange gorge. The gorge, two kilometers wide and one kilometer deep, was carved by a tiny river flowing from the distant Andes up to here where it flows into the ocean not far from here. At the bottom of this ravine, people who formed the Chinchorro culture lived long ago, and its most characteristic element was the fact of mummifying the dead. The oldest mummies date back to 7,000 BC, which means that they are much older even than the Egyptian ones.

And that would be enough for our adventure with the driest desert in the world, and at the same time, as it turns out later, the end of good weather. The next two months will be continuous rains

Na godzinę drogi przed dotarciem do celu naszej podróży w mieście Arica nagle z płaskiej pustyni zaczęliśmy zjeżdżać w jakiś dziwny wąwóz. Szeroki na 2 kilometry i głęboki na kilometr wąwóz był wydrążony przez malutka rzeczkę płynącą z dalekich Andów aż tutaj gdzie niedaleko stąd wpada do oceanu. Na dnie tego wąwozu dawno temu żyli ludzie tworzący kulturę Chinchorro, a jej najbardziej charakterystycznym elementem był fakt mumifikowania zmarłych. Najstarsze mumie datowane są na 7000 lat przed Chrystusem, co znaczy, że są dużo starsze nawet od tych Egipskich.

I to by było na tyle naszej przygody z najsuchsza pustynią świata, a jednocześnie jak się później okażę koniec z dobra pogodą. Całe kolejne dwa miesiące to będą nieustające deszcze.
