Our Life Story | Chapter 17 – Joshua Tree national park!

May 2020 · 4 min read · California

Well hello there,

Being in such a cool place as Joshua Tree makes it easy to shoot great pictures. This place has some amazing spots for photography . Not just photography but just walking aroung this place will get a big smile on your face.

Let me start from the beginning. After leaving San Diego, we had been looking to find a campground near the San Jacinto mountains in a village called Idyllwild. A very nice and quite place. A good looking place but unfortunately the whole state of California must have known about it, the 2 campgrounds we could find were fully booked. Not even 8 by 8 feet room for our small tent. That was a bummer!

Since it was getting late in the evening, we booked a motel room alongside the road we we´re driving to get to Joshua Tree National park. After unpacking our bags for the night we went outside to drink a beer on the staircase while watching the sun going down.

We planned to get up early in the morning around 7 AM to secure a camp spot in one of the most beautiful campground in the park. Just like most things we are planning during this road trip it didn´t quite worked out that way 😊
While enjoying the nice temperature and drinking our beers we met a girl who was staying in the same motel. After chatting with her for about two hours, another guy joined us for a beer and about 1 hour later even more people joined our staircase gathering. It was starting to look like a true Motel party haha.

Eventually we went to bed around 4:30 AM. So as you could imagine we had a rough morning while driving all the way to Joshua Tree. Both with a big hangover and barely 3 hours of sleep, but it was all worth it!

We had a great night and managed to secure that awesome campsite we desired. That day we didn’t do much more than setting up our tent and getting back to our normal selves, that took us the whole day I can tell you…

Chilling away our hangover :)

After relaxing the biggest part of the day we finally found the energy to climb some rocks and get up to one of the highest points surrounding us.

There´s just something special about that “golden hour”. The world seems like a much more peaceful place. Or maybe it was just the lack of sleep and the beers we were drinking again…
On a rock some meters from the place we were sitting we saw 2 guys climbing up and enjoying this great place too. I just couldn’t resist to take some pictures of them.

We thought the pictures had turned out great so the least we could do for them, is to ask if they would like to have the pictures as well. While climbing down the rocks we stopped by and asked them for their email addresses so that we could send them the photographs.

They we’re really pleased with the pictures. In fact, so pleased they invited us to their campfire and beer night. Their campsite was just one spot next to ours so after a couple of drinks we we’re able to crawl back to our own tent. We had another awesome night filled with guitar play, drums, a campfire and very funny conversations.

We got a great tip from one of the guys who lived in the area. This great tip was to visit a hot spring called Deep Creek. It was about a 1,5 hour drive from the Jumbo rock campground.

So after getting some much needed rest we got up early in the morning to get too Deep Creek. The hot spring was located deep in a valley which meant we had a little bit of hiking to do.

That’s usually no problem but if the thermometer almost tops at 40 degrees (104 c Fahrenheit) it is quite a hike. Going down wasn’t the bad part because a really refreshing spring was waiting for us down in the valley. But going back up….. it definitely took some sweating.
All in all, Joshua Tree was really good for us and so far probably one of the best place we visited so far.

Hope you guys enjoyed this chapter in OurLifeStory!
