Fantasy Museum (Mu.fant) Turin Italy

June 2018 · 4 min read · Turin

Hello Dear Steemit community,

I like fantasy and anime! That is the reason why I would show part of a museum in Turin named Mufant. It is the first one in Italy dedicated to science fiction and animes. Why the name Mufant? Simply because Mu is the abbreviation of the word Museum and fant the abbrevation fantasy (or in Italian fantascienza which means science fiction).

The idea of this museum born in 2009 thanks to the idea of two passionate people who involved experts and collectors. They begun their project voluntary workers with the collaboration of external volunteers. In the following years the contribute of the makers, the volunteers, and supporter helped to raise the assembling of this museum by donating what nowadays is well-preserved: thousands of objects and pieces of collection.

The ground floor has a section of boards with photos about series such as Gamma in 1975, Racconti di Fantascienza (science fiction stories) 1979 (Italian). The older series Twilight zone 1969 (Usa). The British series Dottor Who 1980 and The Prisoners 1967. The Survivors 1975 and Sapphire & Steel 1979.

Through the staircase in the first floor the entrance of the museum on the left a replica of Games of Thrones a series which you probably already know. It may be one of the volunteers donations.

In the nearby walls some paints represents attractive scenes of dragons, Are they fantastic aren't it?

Indeed the next door is dedicated to the horror. First of all the movie Zombie and its soundtrack of the band Goblin. A representation of heads cut. A “scarecrow” and a small statue of Nightmare.

The next room is one of my favorite dedicated to Japanese Animes. In the 70's the Italian National broadcast imported the immagination through the Super robots from Japan. The first one was Ufo robot Goldrake inspired to the same named manga of Go Nagai. At that time these kind of anime became very popular even if some attempt of censorship due to an exceed of violence.

These Super robot were designed as massive giants made up by steel in order to protect the world from aliens or ancient civilizations buried since ages. An original and unique vision of Japanese fantasy which was exported overseas at that time.

In the same room a glass board including the models representative of the twelve Gold Saints in the Japanese anime Saint Seiya. One of my favorite anime an interesting combined fantasy between Ancient Greek mythology and Japanese tradition and culture.

In one side of the main room a large plastic inspired to the city of Tim Burton for the Nightmare before Christmas. A city in which everything is overthrown. It looks truly disquieting and what is beauty confused with what is ugly, and the good with the evil.

There is also a room concerning the series of Star Trek and Star Wars they are very popular no need any further introduction but just show some photos.

Coming back to robot a collector donate a model of one robot made of wood and resin. It looks a great handmade artwork.

One of my favorite character was the one of Walt Disney Mickey Mouse the museum preserves something about that

Walking around the museum I found further example of modern robot. By the way do you know the origin of word robot (or Ethimology). According to reasearches and studies such word take origin from Czech language and the meaning is simply worker. A word of Karel Capek in its theatre show R.U.R Robot Universali di Rossum (1920).
The idea of creating a mechanical human or humanoid is much more ancient privilieged the making of mechanical models. The first one was made by Jacques de Vaucauson in 1737.

20180407_173741.jpg

The concept of artificial human took place also in literature, A creation of new type of life which generate terror, anxiety through a no-human and violent behaviour. An example could be Olimpya in Der Sandmann of E.T Hoffman, The mechanical player in The bell-tower of Melville or Eve Future of Villiers de l' Isle Adam.

Coming back to science fiction in the same room a board represents one of my favorite movies E.T the Extra-Terrestrial a 1982 movie of the popular director Steven Spielberg.

I would conclude this post with a personal opinion. This museum represents how anime, series, manga and movies provide “an influence” in Italy. An acknowledgement should go to the interpreters in particular from Japanese language.
