Art of Colombia: legendary Fat Statues in Medellin

Art of Colombia: legendary Fat Statues in Medellin

June 2019 · 2 min read · Medellín

Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!

My today´s post will take on a little tour around some of the famous and renowned art pieces in Colombia, some of the iconic "Fat Statues" by Fernando Botero.

Born in Medellin in 1932, Fernando Botero is one of the most recognized artists of Colombia as well as all Latin America. He is known for a very specific artistic style (sometimes referred to as "Boterism") that is characterized by enormously large figures of people and animals with exaggerated or even distorted body proportions. To put it less formally, he is known for his signature "Fat Statues" :) These statues can be found all over the world - from Germany, Italy and Monaco to France, New York, Singapore, and, of course, his homeland Colombia.

It comes as no surprise that the highest occurrence of the fat statues is in Medellin where Botero was born and raised. There is one particular place in the city where you can find more than 20 of his iconic artworks. Aptly called Botero Plaza, the square is located in Medellin´s old town.

Without further ado, let me now show you what I captured on this spot during my visit of the city some 2 months ago.

I hope you enjoyed this little photo selection of some of Fernando Botero´s famous art pieces. To be honest with you, I wouldn´t say I really liked them since to me, there is something creepy about them but I must admit they are very interesting and unusual :)
