Beauties of Azores: fascinating natural macro world of Sao Miguel

January 2020 · 3 min read · Azores

Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!

Welcome to my special weekly series called Beauties of Azores that was created by me to raise awareness of the extraordinary charm of a captivating Portuguese archipelago known as the Azores.

This episode will be a kind of special as it will be dedicated to something that I have wanted to write about for quite a long time already. Unlike with most of the previous episodes of the series, I will not show you any particular place this time but instead, I will take you on a little tour around a whole world - the fascinating natural macro world of the Sao Miguel Island ;)

I have already shared many photos with the iconic Azorean landscapes and seascapes here on my blog but when hiking around local breathtaking nature, I noticed that the miniature natural world below my feet is actually just as fascinating as the big one around me.

I always want to share the beauty I see on my travel adventures with other people through my photos so I decided to make this special collection that would capture the amazing macro world of nature found on the Azore island of Sao Miguel.

I know that technically, the following photos are not macros but rather just close-ups of various plants and trees taken by my cell phone camera and some of them are not even as focused as I hoped but I have been taking shots for this post at different places for weeks so let me now share the results with you :)

As you probably noticed, green is by far the most dominant color found in the island´s nature but it´s not surprising as the Azores are known for a remarkably lush vegetation growing from the highly fertile volcanic soil. As a matter of fact, Sao Miguel is often referred to as Ilha Verde which means The Green Island in English.

Originally, the island was mostly covered in an ancient and very dense laurel forest that is typical for these subtropical places with high humidity and mild temperatures but over the course of time, it has been replaced by imported trees and plants as well as cultivated pasture lands and fields in many parts of the island. Still, however, hiking around the green hills and forests of Sao Miguel is a wonderful experience that all nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts would enjoy.

I hope you enjoyed this episode of my Beauties of Azores series that was dedicated to the miniature natural kingdom of Sao Miguel :) All of the photos featured in this post were taken by me.
