Beauties of Azores: magnificent bovine kingdom of Sao Miguel

January 2020 · 3 min read · Azores

Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!

Welcome to my special weekly series called Beauties of Azores that was created by me to raise awareness of the extraordinary charm of a captivating Portuguese archipelago known as the Azores.

I am sorry for missing out on this series last week but it was the Christmas holiday and I wanted to share some special Christmas posts with you but today, I am happy to come up with another episode of this travel series called Beauties of Azores.

When browsing internet articles about the Azore Islands, you might stumble upon a peculiar claim saying that there are more cows than people living on the islands.

We have only been to one of the nine Azore Islands so far so I cannot really say how things are on the whole archipelago but considering the fact that we are actually living on the most populated island and yet, the cows still beat the humans in abundance here, I think the claim is totally true.

I should add that we are currently based in a very remote and sparsely populated part of the island where the cows´ numbers are highly superior to that of local people but we have already visited quite a lot of towns in other parts of the island too and the cows seem to be just everywhere, including the largest and capital city of the islands Ponta Delgada.

So in my book, there really is more cows than people on the Azores but I am absolutely fine with it as the bovines make the iconic charming landscape of the islands even more beautiful and special :)

Let me now show you a few pictures of cows that I have taken here on the island of Sao Miguel.

As you could see in the photos above, most of the cows can roam freely around the fresh meadows and green hills, enjoying the juicy pastures to the fullest. I am no expert in livestock agriculture but I think the cows have a great life here on the Azore Islands and it´s really nice to hike around the breathtaking nature while watching the animals enjoying themselves.

I hope you enjoyed this episode of my Beauties of Azores series that was dedicated to what can only be described as the bovine kingdom of **Sao Miguel :) All of the photos featured in this post were taken by me.
