Christmas traditions of Czech Republic: crispy fried carp with potato salad

December 2019 · 3 min read

Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!

After introducing you to one of the most popular Czech Christmas traditions in my yesterday´s post about predicting future from apple, I am going to dedicate my today´s post to another tradition that most Czech people observe at Christmas.

This time around, we will take a closer look at what we eat for the Christmas dinner. In spite of some new modern trends, I think it is safe to say that some 90% of Czech families still eat the same, traditional meal on the Christmas Eve and that is the crispy fried carp with potato salad.

Since the Czech Republic is a landlocked country with the closest sea being hundreds of miles away, we are not used to eating sea food and even though we have quite a lot of rivers, lakes and ponds in the country, fish is eaten much less than chicken, pork or beef throughout the year.

However, on the Christmas Eve, you can smell the distinctive scent of the carp being fried in almost every Czech household as that´s what we have been eating at Christmas for centuries (since at least the 17th century, to be precise) and we still love it! :)

As for the potato salad, the recipe can differ slightly with individual families and regions but it generally includes these ingredients: boiled potatoes (peeled after boiling), hard boiled eggs, mayonnaise, chopped raw onion and a mixture of pickled vegetables.

Since we are currently based on the Azore Islands, a remote Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean where, for obvious reasons, carps are pretty hard to get, we used some other fish species for the dinner but it was delicious too and it even looked the same on the plate so the two photos featured above (I know they are terrible but as I have mentioned here on my blog my times already, I really suck at food photography) are a good illustration of what was served on most Czech tables on the Christmas Eve ;)

How about you my fellow Steemians? What is the traditional Christmas meal in your countries? I know it´s been very quiet here on the blockchain these days but I would really like to get some feedback from you as I am always eager to learn more about how people live in other parts of the world.
