Hi there my Steemian friends and followers!
I love photo contests here on Steem both as a host as well as a participant :) I am currently hosting a Mammal Photography Contest that has been getting some promising response so far (feel free to join the fun!) but today, my post will actually be an entry for a photo contest hosted by our one and only Chris aka @worldcapture.
His weekly contest is called People Photography so obviously, there should be some people featured in the submitted photos :) I am known to prefer nature and wildlife photography but I have some photos with people too so I have been quite a regular participant in Chris´ photo challenge in the recent weeks.
My today´s contribution will take you to the picturesque Colombian town of Guatape where I captured this shot on a street in the town´s center.
I love how the actual scene with the local guys sitting at the table matches the theme of the mural on the wall right next to them :)
Located just some 50 km (30 mi) east of Medellin in the Antioquia Department of Colombia, Guatape is a little town that is home to approximately 6,500 people. Founded by the Spaniards in 1811, the town used to rely almost exclusively on agriculture and mining but these days, there is another industry that makes up an important part of local economy - tourism. Why would tourists want to travel to a little sleepy town found on Medellin´s outskirts? Well, because Guatape is officially considered the most colorful town in Colombia and I am pretty sure it also must be one of the most colorful towns in the world.
Besides the strikingly vivid colors that most Guatape houses are painted with, there is another thing that made the town so unique and popular with tourists. The houses´ lower (and sometimes also upper) facades are decorated with tiles and beautiful dimensioned images. These fresco-like panels are known as zocalos and their motifs are usually tied to what is produced and/or sold in the houses or to the history, culture, traditions and beliefs of the locals.
If you want to see more photos from Guatape, feel free to check my older post on this wonderful little town here and here.
