Portrait Photography: creepy giant statues of children in Prague

July 2018 · 2 min read · Prague

Hi there my Steemit friends and followers!

The #portraitphotography contest hosted by @juliank is where I very rarely compete as I simply have just too few photos that would qualify for that category. Today, however, I will make a little exception and try to submit an entry to this contest, although I am sure these photos are anything but your typical portrait shots :)

I am currently on a little trip in Prague, the capital of my homeland Czech Republic, and the city is famous for an abundance of interesting sights and tourist attractions of all kinds. Undoubtedly, extraordinary statues and sculptures of all shapes, sizes and colors are among the most popular things that tourists come to admire in Prague and today, I will show you a few shots of what is often considered the creepiest sculptural artwork found in the Czech metropolis - a series of weird statues known simply as "The Babies".

Created by the famous Czech artist David Cerny, these babies can be found at two locations in Prague - most of them are installed on the Zizkov Lookout Tower and three more are situated right next to the Kampa Museum in the historic center of the city.

Just as if having these giant (3.5 m or 11.5 ft long and 2.6 m or 8.5 ft tall) bronze babies "crawling" on the ground was not creepy enough, the author of this bizarre artwork decided to replace the babies´ faces with bar codes.

These three babies have been scaring visitors of the Kampa Museum since 2008. Yet, people love to take photos with them so it is not easy to take an isolated shot of them as there is always someone standing next to them or even sitting on them. I did my best but you can still see some "unwanted objects" (i. e. parts of real children :D) in the last photo where I tried to capture all tree sculptures together.
