The waterfall of San Gerardo de Dota is located in the middle of the mountains of Cerro de la Muerte. It is part of the Savegre River, one of the most beautiful rivers in Costa Rica and the cleanest in Central America.
It is an area surrounded by high mountains, cold and wet weather. Dense forests of oaks and many other plant species accompany the path.
It is a walk of about an hour and a half, through a rustic path, that has an extension of two kilometers, in total there are 4 kilometers of medium difficulty where it is easy to observe large numbers of birds, for this reason it is one of the most visited sites for bird photography in Costa Rica. There is no entrance fee and it is forbidden to picnic and camp.
Myioborus torquatus
With a little luck, during the journey, you will be able to observe the majestic quetzal, the sacred bird and one of the most beautiful in the world.
Pharomachrus mocinno
The sound of the waterfall can be heard a hundred meters before arriving. The final stretch of the route requires crossing a beautiful hammock bridge that goes into the mountain and a descent through a muddy passage that leads to the base of the waterfall.
Definitely one of the most beautiful trails in Costa Rica and that can be visited in a few hours.
