The remains of a small building lie next to the walls of a colossus, the Arenal volcano. Until a few years ago it was a very active volcano, which was visited by tourists from around the world to see the spectacle of rocks and lava. Today its walls still retain the marks of that intense activity.

A little history.
Before the 1968 eruption, the Arenal Volcano was an almost perfect conical volcanic mountain, covered by tropical forest and with minimal fumarole activity.
In geological terms, with its 4000 years, the Arenal Volcano is relatively young. Before the eruption of 1968, the last violent activity of the volcano was dated around 1500 BC.

The volcano is 1,633 meters high with a 140 meter crater. He woke up suddenly and abruptly with a strong explosion of rocks, lava and ashes on July 29, 1968. This great eruption resulted in 87 dead people and the total destruction of the towns of Tabacón, Pueblo Nuevo and San Luis.

Another aspect that can be distinguished in the Arenal Volcano is its artificial lagoon, which is used for the production of hydroelectric power, in order to meet the demand for electricity from Costa Rica and part of Central America, in addition to several projects of irrigation of Guanacaste.

Despite the lack of volcanic activity, tourism has not decreased in this area. The small and quiet town of La Fortuna, which is the gateway to the Arenal, offers other natural and adventure attractions, as well as many accommodation options, restaurants and activities.
