Hiking to Šomoška castle

July 2020 · 3 min read · District of Lučenec

In the morning we arrive by bus to the village of Šurice, where our today's tour begins. This small village has attracted me from the beginning. There is a truly beautiful church in it. We didn't get inside, but it looks impressive from the outside.

We enjoy the view of him for a while, I take a few pictures and continue on our way. A rock named Owl Castle rises above the village.

On the way to the top we go through the forest until we reach a meadow from which we have such an interesting view.

We are at the top a few meters. From the rock we have a view of the whole area.

We exhale from a steep climb, take a photo and go down. Along the way we pass a lizard that thinks we don't see it. I take a picture of her in detail when she poses so nicely to me and I go away so as not to disturb her unnecessarily.

It's a nice day, the sun is shining on our way.

We cross meadows and enter the forest. As soon as we entered the bottom, I noticed a roe deer looking at us from behind a tree. He was probably wondering who wouldn't rest in that heat and disturbed him while relaxing.

The trees in this grove are extremely interesting to me, so I immortalize them.

As we go, we find the ruins of houses in the middle of the forest. From the homes of the workers, who sometimes mined in the local mines, only stone walls overgrown with grass and trees remained.

We come to the lookout tower from which we see the destination of our journey. The team is Šomoška Castle. In the background we see Salgó Castle.

We still have a long way to go. We eat something and continue on our way.

We come under the castle.

Here is an interesting natural formation, a basalt waterfall. 9 meters are detected. It was from basalt that the local lords decided to build a castle.

Šomoška Castle was an important stronghold in the fight against the Ottoman threat. In 1576, however, the well-fortified castle did not withstand the onslaught of Ottoman troops. In 1593, the castle was recaptured by Austrian imperial troops.

In troubled Hungary, he was occupied by insurgent troops during the anti-Habsburg uprisings. It was first occupied in 1605 by the troops of Štefan Bočkaj, in 1619 by the troops of Gabriel Bethlen and in 1703 by the Kuruk Francis II Rákóczi.

During the suppression of Rákóczi's uprising, he was conquered by imperial troops and blown up the castle. They did so so that the castle would never become a refuge for the rebels in the future. Since then, the castle has fallen into disrepair.

We walk around the castle, look around the ruins and enjoy the view of the surroundings.

The best preserved part of the castle is one of the bastions.

We went through what we could, ate and went on the bus. We walk through the forest where there are lakes, which probably belonged to the castle.
