Trip to Calvary in Banská Štiavnica

March 2021 · 2 min read · District of Banská Štiavnica

We have been watching Calvary from the city for several days, but we have only chosen it today. We drove from the hotel to the parking lot below the hill and headed upstairs. After a while we come to the first stop. This immediately attracted me with its beautiful decoration in the interiors. It is truly a work of art that depicts motifs from the life of Jesus Christ.

After we have seen the beautiful decoration we continue on our way. The ascent is not difficult and we are gradually passing other stops, such as the Dungeon stop or the Holy Sepulcher.

The Calvary in Banská Štiavnica is one of the most beautiful Baroque Calvary in Europe. It was built on the hill Scharffenberg (Ostrý vrch) by the Jesuit patron František Perger. He succeeded thanks to the gifts of rich burghers, dignitaries, but also poor mining families. Everyone tried to help build this work within their means. The main donors are commemorated by coats of arms on the facades of individual stops.

Calvary has a total of 17 stops, unlike most calvars that have 14 stops. It was completed in 1751.

After passing all the stops, we are on the hill. From here there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area and Banská Štiavnica. From here we can see the caldera of an old volcano. That spark by falling through the walls of the crater.

This view is so nice that I decided to perform at Calvary at night. And I did well. The night city looks mysterious and in the darkness the majesty of the Old and New Castle stands out. The only downside is that there is a strong wind and as I take photos from a tripod, most of the photos are blurred. That's why I enjoy this place longer until I can take pictures of what I want.

I must admit that this calvary in Banská Štiavnica is so far the most beautiful I have had the opportunity to visit.

Well thank you.
