Travel Norway #25: Mardalsfossen - Biggest waterfall of Norway???

May 2019 · 3 min read · Molde

Hi Friends!

Title is telling the interesting story here.

Presented waterfall is called Mardalsfossen and it has over 700m in total (358m in upper fall and 296m meters of lower fall) is in fact the highest waterfall in Norway with single drop of water. It is located in the municipality of Nesset in Møre og Romsdal county.

I saw it on many pictures before I get there and I saw amazing and big waterfall with great amount of falling water with huge splash below - this what I expected to see but the reality was... quite dissapointing.

I run to the place as crazy but when I saw "it" I just became speechless. I didn't know before that the waterfall doesn't look like on the pictures - most of the year it is just a tiny mountain stream... why You ask?

Waters falling down the river are now under strict control of a dam high in the mountains, in 70's, norwegian electric power industry decide to build a water power plant on the river.

Huge manifestations and resistnace from locals, scientists and eco-warriors didn't helped. (In 1970 Arne Næss, the Norwegian founder of the Deep Ecology movement, tied himself with 300 others in protest against the building of a dam and the subsequent removal of the waterfall.)

In final, the water power plant and the dam controlling the river has been build - and this huge, highest waterfall of Norway is no longer a pride for the most part of the year - it is like a big shame and an example of how the "green energy" from water flow inpact on nature and how big changes it can bring.

The waterfall is still flowing with its full force but only for few weeks during the summer season - for the visiting tourists (20 June to 20 August).

I didn't have chance to see it on my own eyes yet. All I saw was a embarrassing spectacle of nature controlled by human and his technology.
