Mekka artystów - Kazimierz Dolny - Mecca of Artists

On Saturday I travelled with J. to Kazimierz Dolny. The road from Lublin takes about an hour, a little longer if you drive by bus. This small town with just over 3 thousand inhabitants boasts an impressive history and equally rich Renaissance architecture. In the 12th century, the settlement belonging to the Benedictine Order was handed over by King Casimir II the Just to the Norbertine nuns from Zwierzyniec near Cracow. As a token of gratitude, the nuns changed the name of the settlement to Kazimierz. The adjective "Dolny" (meaning 'lower') was added to distinguish its name from the Kazimierz situated upstream, near Cracow.

W sobotę wybrałem się wraz z J. do Kazimierza Dolnego. Droga z Lublina zajmuje ok. godziny, trochę dłużej jeśli jedzie się busem. Ta niepozorna, licząca sobie niewiele ponad 3 tys. mieszkańców miejscowość nad Wisłą może poszczycić się ciekawą historią i równie bogatą renesansową architekturą. W XII wieku osada należąca do zakonu benedyktynów została przekazana przez króla Kazimierza Sprawiedliwego norbertankom z podkrakowskiego Zwierzyńca. W ramach wdzięczności, siostry zakonne zmieniły nazwę osady na Kazimierz. Przymiotnik "Dolny" został dodany, aby odróżnić jej nazwę od leżącego w górze rzeki Kazimierza pod Krakowem.

In the 15th century king Władysław Jagiełło located the town under Magdeburg Law - the market square, streets and parcels for development were designated. In 1519 Kazimierz Dolny became owned by the Firlej family. A golden age began for the small town by the Vistula River. The Firlej family took care of the town's privileged position in the trade of crops floated on the Vistula to Gdańsk, which was very profitable. The golden age of Kazimierz ended in 1656, when the army of King Charles Gustav of Sweden burnt down the town and its castle. In order to revive trade in the war-ravaged town, King Jan III Sobieski issued a decree allowing Armenian, Greek and Jewish merchants to settle down in it. However, the economic revival did not last long. Kazimierz Dolny disappeared into the depths of history. Lack of development allowed the original Renaissance buildings to be preserved, though.

W XV wieku król Władysław Jagiełło dokonał lokacji miasta na prawie magdeburskim - wytyczono rynek, ulice i wyznaczono działki pod zabudowę. W roku 1519 Kazimierz Dolny przeszedł we władanie rodu Firlejów. Dla nadwiślańskiego miasteczka nastał złoty wiek. Firlejowie dbali o uprzywilejowanie miasta w handlu zbożem spławianym Wisłą do Gdańska, który przynosił znaczne zyski. Złoty wiek Kazimierza skończył się, gdy w 1656 roku wojska króla szwedzkiego Karola Gustawa spaliły miasto i zamek. Aby wskrzesić handel w zrujnowanym przez wojnę miasteczku, król Jan III Sobieski wydał dekret pozwalający osiedlać się kupcom ormiańskim, greckim i żydowskim. Ożywienie gospodarcze nie trwało jednak długo. Kazimierz Dolny zniknął w mrokach historii. Brak rozwoju pozwolił jednak na zachowanie oryginalnej renesansowej zabudowy.

The rediscovery of Kazimierz Dolny took place in the 19th century, when it became a holiday resort. Villas and guest houses for holidaymakers started to be appear in the surrounding gorges. The town, inhabited mainly by Jewish merchants, was flooded with painters and other artists, who brought some life to this dormant town. In 1927 the town regained its municipal rights. Again, the glory of Kazimierz did not last long - during World War II German occupants murdered the majority of the Jewish population and left the town in ruin.

Ponowne odkrycie Kazimierza Dolnego dokonało się w XIX wieku, kiedy stał on się miejscowością wypoczynkową. W okolicznych wąwozach zaczęły powstawać wille i pensjonaty dla letników. W zamieszkanym głównie przez żydowskich kupców miasteczku pojawili się malarze i inni artyści, wprowadzając nieco kolorytu do tej sennej mieściny. W 1927 roku miejscowość odzyskała prawa miejskie. I tym razem chwała Kazimierza nie trwała długo - podczas II wojny światowej niemieccy okupanci wymordowali większość żydowskiej populacji i zostawili miasteczko w ruinie.

Nowadays Kazimierz again can boast impressive architecture, which attracts about one million tourists annually. The reconstruction of the town was carried out largely thanks to efforts of the architect Karol Siciński. When J. and I reached the market square in Kazimierz, we saw a terrible sight - crowds of tourists walking to the ruins of the castle, strolling around the market square or sitting in the gardens of nearby restaurants. Old gypsies were walking between them, aggressively repeating "Come here, I'll tell you something! Come on, I'll tell fortune!" We passed the market sideways and entered Lubelska Street leading to Korzeniowy Dół (Root Bottom) Gorge.

Dzisiejszy Kazimierz znów może poszczycić się imponującą architekturą, która przyciąga co roku około miliona turystów. Odbudowa miasta dokonała się w dużej mierze dzięki staraniom architekta Karola Sicińskiego. Gdy wraz z J. doszliśmy do kazimierskiego rynku naszym oczom ukazał się straszliwy widok - tłumy turystów ciągnących do ruin zamku, przechadzających się po rynku lub przesiadujących w ogródkach pobliskich restauracji. Między nimi przechadzały się stare cyganki-wróżbitki, agresywnie pokrzykując "No chodź tu, coś ci powiem! Chodź, powróżę! Czekaj, no!". Minęliśmy rynek bokiem i weszliśmy w prowadzącą do wąwozu Korzeniowy Dół ulicę Lubelską.

I don't know if anyone had measured the density of artists per km² in Kazimierz Dolny, but the results must be overwhelming. Art galleries and painting studios are located everywhere. Other buildings include restaurants, cafes and rooms for rent. The town makes a lot of money on the snobs from Warsaw; actors and directors. Thanks to them the prices in restaurants and inns are so high.

The surface of the street leading to the ravine was muddy and full of holes. Nevertheless, in the courtyards of the nearby houses you could see Porsche or other expensive cars. Not far from Kazimierz there is a house belonging to actor Daniel Olbrychski. It's no wonder - the ridges of Kazimierz's gorges are extremely scenic.

Nie wiem czy ktoś mierzył zagęszczenie artystów na kilometr kwadratowy w Kazimierzu Dolnym, ale wyniki muszą zwalać z nóg. Galerie sztuki i pracownie malarskie znajdują się na każdym kroku. W pozostałych budynkach znajdują się restauracje, kawiarnie i pokoje do wynajęcia. Miasteczko zarabia krocie na snobach z Warszawy; aktorach i reżyserach. To dzięki nim ceny w restauracjach i pensjonatach są tak wysokie.

Nawierzchnia prowadzącej do wąwozu uliczki była dziurawa i błotnista. Mimo to, na podwórkach pobliskich domów można było zaobserwować Porsche lub inny drogi samochód. Niedaleko Kazimierza znajduje się dom należący do Daniela Olbrychskiego. Trudno się dziwić, zbocza kazimierskich wąwozów są niezwykle malownicze.

On the way to the ravine we were passed by several electric buses filled with tourists. The distance from the Kazimierz Market Square to the gorge is barely 2 kilometers. For many people, however, this is too much. I would understand it if these trolleys were filled with elderly people, but the majority of passengers were blasé 30-year-olds. On the other hand, at least they do not torment any horses.

W drodze do wąwozu minęło nas kilka wypełnionych turystami meleksów. Odległość od kazimierskiego rynku do wąwozu to ledwo 2 kilometry. Dla wielu ludzi to jednak zbyt wiele. Zrozumiałbym, gdyby te wózki wypełnione były starszymi osobami, jednak większość pasażerów stanowili zblazowani trzydziestolatkowie. Z drugiej strony - przynajmniej nie męczą koni jak w Zakopanem.

Near the Korzeniowy Dół gorge there is a cottage from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. It can be rented for an overnight stay and is said to be popular with newlyweds. The atmosphere of the cottage is a bit spoiled by modern decorations and its location few meters from the road.

Niedaleko wąwozu Korzeniowy Dół znajduje się chata z przełomu XVII-XVIII wieku. Można wynająć ją na nocleg i podobno cieszy się popularnością u nowożeńców. Atmosferę chaty psują nieco współczesne dekoracje i położenie kilka metrów od szosy.

After returning from the gorge we wanted to explore Kazimierz, but the plan was hindered by persistent rain. On the market, tourists in plastic raincoats were crowding under the arcades of tenement houses and under the roof of the well. We found shelter in the restaurant "Sielanka" located on the Small Market Square.

Po powrocie z wąwozu chcieliśmy pozwiedzać Kazimierz, w tym jednak przeszkodził nam uporczywy deszcz. Na rynku turyści w foliowych płaszczykach przeciwdeszczowych tłoczyli się w podcieniach kamienic i pod dachem studni. My znaleźliśmy schronienie w położonej na małym rynku restauracji Sielanka.

The prices in "Sielanka" are not the lowest, but a cosy interior compensates for the pain of opening your wallet. The menu includes a wide selection of tea and coffee. In nice weather, it's worth sitting in the restaurant garden and watching the life taking place in the nearby market square. On the top of the restaurant there is an apartment for rent.

Ceny w Sielance nie należą do najniższych, jednak przytulne wnętrze rekompensuje ból przy wyciąganiu portfela. W karcie znajduje się bogaty wybór herbaty i kawy. Przy ładnej pogodzie warto usiąść w restauracyjnym ogródku i obserwować życie toczące się na pobliskim rynku. Na górze restauracji znajduje się apartament do wynajęcia.

When it eventually stopped raining, we went to see historical granaries located by the Vistula River. After the fire in 1655, they were rebuilt with the Firlej family's money. One of the granaries houses the Environmental Branch of the Vistula River Museum. Then we returned to the center along the riverside boulevard.

Gdy w końcu przestało padać wybraliśmy się zobaczyć położone nad Wisłą zabytkowe spichrze. Po pożarze w 1655 roku, zostały one odbudowane z pieniędzy Firlejów. W jednym ze spichlerzy znajduje się Oddział Przyrodniczy Muzeum Nadwiślańskiego. Potem wróciliśmy do centrum wzdłuż nadwiślańskiego bulwaru.

I had been to Kazimierz Dolny before, but it never impressed me as much as it has done now. The architecture of the marketplace is unique, but it disappears obscured by crowds of tourists and café umbrellas. However, you just have to leave the main trail to discover mysterious nooks and beautiful wooden cottages. You can also hide from the crowds in reeds on the banks of the Vistula, or on the slope of one of the hills. The vicinity of Kazimierz Dolny is one of the most beautiful in the Lublin region, therefore it's worth visiting the neighbouring villages. And to finally return to the market square and other tourist attractions, but at night, in the autumn or in the middle of the week, to duly appreciate these centuries of history of the small town by the Vistula River.

Bywałem już wcześniej w Kazimierzu Dolnym, jednak nigdy nie zrobił on na mnie takiego wrażenia jak teraz. Architektura rynku jest wyjątkowa, ginie jednak przesłonięta tłumem turystów i kawiarnianymi parasolami. Wystarczy jednak zejść z głównego szlaku, żeby odkryć tajemnicze zakamarki i przepiękne drewniane chaty. Przed tłumami można też ukryć się w szuwarach nad brzegiem Wisły, lub na zboczu któregoś z pagórków. Okolice Kazimierza Dolnego należą do najpiękniejszych na Lubelszczyźnie, warto więc zwiedzić okoliczne wsie. I wreszcie wrócić na rynek i pozostałe turystyczne atrakcje, ale nocą, jesienią lub w środku tygodnia, aby należycie docenić te wieki historii małego nadwiślańskiego miasteczka.
