kirchenburg in Biertan

Fortress Monasteries/Kościoły warowne

Many peoples passed through medieval Transylvania, or Ardeal (from Latin "ultra silvam" or Hungarian "Erdő-elve" - on the other side of the woods): Pannonian Avars, Slavs, Bulgarians, Székelys. It was quite a wild land, attacked in the Middle Ages by the Huns, Cumans, Mongols and later also by the Turks. In order to populate these lands and defend the borders against attacks of the nomads, king of Hungary and Croatia, Geza II brought Saxons to Transylvania.

Aby zaludnić te ziemie i bronić granic przed atakami koczowników, król Węgier i Chorwacji, Gejza II sprowadził do Transylwanii Sasów.

The settlers came mainly from the western part of the Holy Roman Empire, and the term "Saxons" in Hungarian applied to all Germans. Hermannstadt (Sibiu) was the centre of their area of colonization. Their thrift and knowledge of mining, among others, led to rapid economic growth of the region. At the instigation of king Andrew II of Hungary, Teutonic Knights also came to Transylvania, building many cities and castles in the vicinity of Brașov (formerly Kronstadt).

Osadnicy pochodzili głównie z zachodnich części Świętego Cesarstwa Rzymskiego, a określenie Sasi w języku węgierskim dotyczyło wszystkich Niemców. Centrum ich osadnictwa stanowiło Hermannstadt (Sibiu). Ich gospodarność i wiedza z zakresu, m.in. górnictwa, doprowadziła do szybkiego wzrostu gospodarczego regionu.

In 1241-1242, the areas inhabited by the Saxons fell victim to the Mongolian invasion (which also wiped out Cumans). Despite the fierce defense, many settlements became destroyed. In order to prevent such a disaster in the future, the Saxons began the construction of many strongholds, including fortified churches (kirchenburgen) with high towers and hoardings, often with extra fortified towers, which were surrounded by double or triple rings of walls in which the villagers could hide during the siege. Transylvania was called Siebenburgen from seven major Saxon towns - Bistritz (Bistrița), Hermannstadt (Sibiu), Klausenburg (Cluj-Napoca), Kronstadt (Brașov), Mediasch (Mediaș), Mühlbach (Sebeș) and Schäßburg (Sighișoara).

Transylwanię zaś nazywano Siedmiogrodem od siedmiu głównych saskich ośrodków - Bistritz (Bystrzyca), Hermannstadt (Sibiu), Klausenburg (Kluż-Napoka), Kronstadt (Braszów), Mediasch (Mediaș), Mühlbach (Sebeș) i Schäßburg (Sighișoara).

Chirpar / Kirchenburg

After leaving Cârţa, where we spent the night at the campsite, the first place we stopped in was Chirpar (German: Kirchenburg). It was a poor village, with rugged houses, inhabited by Roma gypsies. The highest point of the village, as one can guess, was a hill on which a fortified church stood. The gate was open, so we went inside through it.

The church looked abandoned. There was plenty of dirt and dust, plaster fell off the walls, various things were crumbling everywhere - prayer books, German novels, land and mortgage registers, agricultural tools, musical instruments... After all, nobody seemed to have tried to steal them. In Transylvanian fortified churches there is usually a can to collect money for the renovation of the church. It wasn't there, so Z. decided to leave a small donation in the local office. The man he talked to was not sure what to do with the money, as if he were holding back the question "Do we have a historic church here?!"

Apold / Trapold

DSC_4087.jpg

A few kilometres further there was the village of Apold. There was also a fortified church, but this one even from afar looked much more impressive. From a close distance it was clear that someone cared about it. On the entrance door there was a poster about the masses being celebrated here, the walls were whitewashed, the courtyard looked neat - grapes were growing in the arcades, the lawn was recently mown, and individual buildings within the walls of the fort were described in three languages - Romanian, German and English.

By accident, during the conversation with the fortress keeper we discovered that she was Polish. Together with her husband, a German from Berlin, they established a foundation to maintain and renovate the fortified church in Apold. As she said, they try to hire local craftsmen for renovation work. It was nice to meet someone from Poland in such an interesting place. We left a small donation for the renovation of the church.

I have to admit that I wanted to visit Sighisoara since I read a short article written by @vonaurolacu. Our guides stated that the city may be nice, but it is very commercialized (and of course it is worse in comparison with Sibiu). Oh well...

No cóż...

DSC_4151.jpg

DSC_4155.jpg

DSC_4164.jpg

...they were right. I have no doubt that Sighișoara looks very special at night. During the day, crowds of tourists can effectively spoil the atmosphere. Sighișoara is divided into the Old Town and the newer part at the foot of the hill, which surrounds the old one. To get to the older part we had to find a parking place, among dozens of coaches with tourists. Fortunately, the parking is not expensive - if I remember correctly, for the whole day (>3 hours), we paid 5 lei. Then, in the crowd of other visitors, we entered the city through the Shoemakers' Tower (town in its prime had 15 guilds and 20 handicraft branches, hence the names).

Sighișoara was included in the UNESCO cultural heritage register as an example of original medieval town architecture. The buildings there are indeed beautiful (and colorful). Unfortunately, as is the case with historical monuments, there are plenty of stalls with crap and posey restaurants around. Despite it's incredible history, town smells of cheap thrills with vampire souvenirs and vampire-places. Interestingly, Sighișoara's partner cities are Lublin and Zamość.

Throughout the 17th century School stairs (Scara şcolarilor), we got to the highest hill in the city, on which stands an Evangelical church and an old German cemetery, as well as a German-speaking school. Then we explored some of the old town, including going up the clock tower from 1556. We ate lunch in Sighișoara, and then set off on our way.

Zjedliśmy też w Sighișoarze obiad, a potem ruszyliśmy w dalszą drogę.

Biertan / Birthälm

DSC_4385.jpg

One of the seven fortified churches of Transylvania, listed by UNESCO, is located in Biertan. In the years 1572-1867 the seat of the Lutheran bishopric was there. The interior of the church looks very similar to other Protestant churches, but what's interesting, one of the towers was put at the disposal of the Catholic minority, who remained faithful to their religion, after the rest of the village inhabitants converted to Protestantism. You have to pay 10 lei for access to the stronghold. It houses also a German bookstore and a small museum.

Biertan stands out among other villages with fortified churches. It is basically a small town, with a market square and several tenement houses. Like most Romanian towns, it is very colorful. A postcard church, postcard town and a postcard view of the surrounding hills.

Biertan wyróżnia się wśród innych miejscowości z warownymi kościołami. Jest w zasadzie małym miasteczkiem, z niewielkim rynkiem i kilkoma kamienicami. Jak większość rumuńskich miejscowości, jest niezwykle kolorowa. Pocztówkowy kościół, pocztówkowe miasteczko i pocztówkowy widok na okoliczne wzgórza.

Valea Viilor / Wurmloch

DSC_4447.jpg

We went to one more UNESCO church in Valea Viilor. To be honest, I was already tired of visiting them, every one of them looks the same - tall tower, puritanical interior, walls. They are undoubtedly interesting, but we rushed through the picturesque Romanian villages, and I could only look for a moment at the colorful houses and beautiful Orthodox chapels. And there was something to look at - wooden crosses consisting of dozens of little crosses, blue crosses, stone crosses, chapels with icons, painted Jesuses - destroyed and freshly painted, yellow and colorful, slender and muscular, ugly and beautiful, everything depending on the hand of the local artist. The land of extremes. Geneva or Byzantium. Rarely something in between.

Genewa albo Bizancjum. Rzadko coś pomiędzy.

The entrance to the fortified church in Valea Viilor costs 8 lei. In the fortress there is a small museum dedicated to the Saxons of Transylvania. I also noticed the modern sculptures exhibited in the recesses of the fortifications, but I do not know anything about it. Coming back from Valea Viilor we entered one more place...

Wracając z Valea Viilor wstąpiliśmy do jeszcze jednego miejsca...

Peasant fortress of Slimnic / Zamek chłopski w Slimnicu

DSC_4654.jpg

In Slimnitz (Stolzenburg) there are ruins of a medieval castle. It was a peasant fortress which, in the event of an attack, could provide shelter to the inhabitants of several nearby villages, together with their belongings. It was built in the 14th century and expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries, but after a plague in 1719 it gradually fell into ruin.

DSC_4548.jpg

To the ruins of the castle leads a rugged, brittle road. The castle is surrounded by a fence and on the gate is written "entrance - 3 lei". We entered the gate and went up a narrow path. The entrance to the fortress was guarded by a flock of goats and sheep, which drew our attention. How often do you meet goats in medieval ruins? We knocked on the door...

Do ruin zamku wiedzie dziurawa, szutrowa droga. Zapukaliśmy do drzwi...

DSC_4573.jpg

A middle-aged lady, who did not resemble a custodian, but rather a typical country housewife, opened the door. This is because the ruins in Slimnice are not like other ruins. Inside the medieval walls there is a farm - vegetable and flower gardens, a sheep enclosure, rabbit cages, a dug-out, utility rooms and sleeping quarters. The only "museum" part is the surviving tower, from which you can see the panorama of the village. The hosts welcome visitors from 10 to 19 and do little about their presence. The hostess was working on the garden patch and her husband was repairing the lawnmower. We enjoyed a beautiful afternoon having yet another day in Romania.
