Thounsands of Herons in Petulu Village, Bali

January 2020 · 3 min read · Bali

Hello, I would like to share with you my trip to Petulu Village, in Bali, Indonesia.

It was late in the afternoon when I arrived on the village road of Petulu village. Along the road, there were trees growing by the side of the village road. And these trees are the home of thousands of herons.

Petulu Village, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia. The village of herons.

These herons are everywhere. In trees, temple buildings, people houses, electricity cables. Literary every where.

The trees along the road side, were the home of the herons.

I walked along the village road with my clients and found that all trees growing along the road where occupied by the herons. They built their nest on tree branches. Some time they flew down and walked on the road. They were not afraid of people.

Well, you probably wonder why there are so many herons in this village. Petulu is a unique village. The local people of Petulu believe that the herons were sent by God for them to take care. In 1965 12 herons came to the village. The local treat them with care as if they were guest. Fast forward 40 years later, the number of these herons have become thousands.

The strange thing, these herons only come to this village. They don't go to the neighboring villages. Once I arrive in the border of Petulu village, there were no herons to be seen anymore.

This was the border of the village, there one or two birds on the street, but no nests on the trees.

These herons nowadays become a tourist destination. Some tourists comet to visit this village to see the herons and how they live peacefully with people.

The best place to observe these herons was from the village hall. The village hall is a two story building that you could go to the upper floor and observe the birds from there. There was a bamboo tree near the village hall and many birds nested there. Look at these photos.

From the second floor looking down to the bamboo trees, I could see the herons closer.

I managed to take photo of the baby heron on its nest. I took this from a very close distance, not using any tele lens whatsoever.

Bird nests on the bamboo trees, some eggs could be seen on one nest.

These herons are unique phenomenon. There is only one place that have this in Bali. Make sure you come here, when you come to Bali.

DISCLAIMER: When you walk in the village, you will notice something. It is the smell of a dropping of thousand herons. You will feel disturbed by the smell at the beginning, but after sometime you will get used to it. Just like the local people who already smell the dropping since the last forty years.
