When The Evening Comes to Kumbasari Market

November 2019 · 3 min read · Denpasar

Kumbasari is the main market in Denpasar city, Bali. It is a great place to visit when you want to have a glimpse of the Bali local culture. There is a lot going on in this market.

I went to Kumbasari Market with my family last weekend. Just need to buy some stuff and the enjoy the colorful lights in the Tukad Badung river.

The market is located in the center of Denpasar city, so there usually a lot of people in the market. And also a lot of traffic in the street. That evening I went was the same.

There is a river that divided the market into two: the west and the east of the river. The river is called Tukad Badung, which nowadays become popular among the local because the government decided to fix it, to make it a place to visit.

Personally, I like visiting market. Not to buy anything, but only to look. I like the colors, I like what happening in the market. And I like taking photos in the market. (See also my other post about Ubud market here.)

This market has been here since hundred of years ago. Even before Bali was ruled by kings, this market existed. When the king was about to make an announcement to the people, he would go to the market, since the market was the place where people gathered and socialize in the past.

It was also called Pasar Payuk before. It means pan market since many of pan sellers came here to sell their product. The pans were made of clay and used for cooking. Nowadays, nobody use clay pan for cooking, and there were no pan seller anymore there.

Nowadays, the market become the place where many sellers come to bring their merchandise. You could see daily needs from food, fruit, clothing, and accessories.

I just went into the west side of the market, the main street called Gajah Mada street, and looked at the lights shinning in the river. There were quite a number of people by the side of the river, taking photos, and spending their time there with their family and friends.

I was there from twilight. After some time, the sun light was gone completely and evening came. That's the time when we left the beautiful market.
