What Do Kangaroos, My Day & Australian Punk Rock Have in Common? PLUS: WATCH OUT FOR ROOS!

February 2019 · 3 min read · Victoria

As irreverent and callous as this sounds, whenever I see dead kangaroos this song comes into my head. It's by an Australian punk band called Cosmic Psychos, who've been around forever and are a wicked fun live band to see. They're from country Victoria and if you don't like them, you're a dickhead - well, so they say on their bumper stickers, but I promise you it's an affectionate thing rather than anything TOO outrageous. It's just what we say here. I've included the youtube link below if you want to hear what has been in my head all day, in a really stupid irreverent and inappropriate way. Ear worms are like that.

So I woke up this morning with some pretty terrible news from overseas, which I won't talk about right now because I'm still trying to reconcile the whole thing and need to talk to my honey when he finally lands on British shores. Me, I hightailed it to the ocean, hoping to get sun up to say goodbye to a man who died yesterday. Felt appropriate somehow to see him out that way. It was super dark and the kangaroos were out in force, but I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have. And I really, really should have. I mean, it's not like the warning signs haven't been around for the last ten years I've been driving that road to the ocean.

Honestly, if you are driving in Australia, take those signs SERIOUSLY. They can do ALOT of damage to the front of your car! Luckily the van's bumper took most of it - I did pull over and check it was driveable and it seemed fine. It was dark and I couldn't see the roo anywhere.

So, I had a surf, washed my soul clean. Came in, got changed, spun around to put board in the car and hit it on a pole. Is that the three unlucky things? So far, so good. I'm alive, and the car doesn't matter as much as that fact. For all it's ups and downs, life is pretty good.

Next part of the story, went to work. Leaving work, I noticed there was something kinda weird about the car. Hot damn - no numberplates!! I must have spent at least an hour driving back and forth along that road - no roo, no plates.

@nateonsteemit suggested the 'roo might be wearing the plate as a splint. I argue they aren't that clever - I mean, big moving object on a road? Not such a good idea to jump in front of it? Are you KIDDING me? Those kangaroos have lived there years and haven't figured that out. Dopey buggers. Dickheads, the Cosmic Psychos would call them.

Am I sounding Australian yet?

Anyway, the day wasn't a total write off - and the damage to the van isn't so bad either, apart from expense of new plates. I've had a lovely arvo steemin' with @sagescrub, and got my 'CONTRIBUTORS' badge for @homesteaderscoop, which makes me feel super buzzed and proud to be part of a such an amazing venture.
