Epic RoadTrip Day 13

Epic RoadTrip Day 13

June 2022 · 3 min read · California

Day 13 started off slow.  We had to pack up camp and hit the road though we didn't want to leave.  The past few days have been overcast but today the sun let us know it was still there.

Within a few miles we already found our first stop for the day.

Morro Rock

Standing at 576ft, this is not your regular rock.  Jutting up from the Ocean you'll find this 23 million year old volcanic plug stealing the show.  It was named El Morro, meaning Crown shaped hill, in 1542 by a Portuguese explorer.

The rock has been used by sailors as a point of navigation for hundreds of years.  In more recent years it has been used as a bird sanctuary for the peregrine falcon.

After hanging out for a few it was back on the road.  This drive is absolutely beautiful.  If you look at this picture you can see the PCH chasing the coast through the hills and valleys.

Next stop - San Simeon

Along the coast, near the town of San Simeon you'll find...and smell, something down on the beach.  Upon further investigation we found some signs.  This was an Elephant Seal Beach!

We were there for the Adult Female Molting season.  You'll also see juvenile seals on the beach year round.  While we were walking up we started to see a seal here and there.

We continued down the path in hopes to see more.  Then we came to an observation deck with a few folks snapping pictures.

HOLY COW!!!!  They're everywhere and they're huge!  The females weigh around 1600lbs but the males can get up to 5000lbs.  😲  Have a look at these.

It was an amazing site to see but the smell was atrocious.  I'm sure if you hang out there long enough you wouldn't notice it anymore.

Up the coast we headed, stopping at different beaches and collecting rocks.  Just North of Gamboa Point Beach you come to a bridge.

Big Creek Bridge

This bridge has been seen in movies and pictures decades.  It's the Big Creek Bridge.  As soon as we pulled in the squirrels came out of hiding.  Of course I had to feed it some bread (probably illegal oops).

A quick glance back to the left and you can see the bridge.   Do you recognize it from anywhere?

We continued North up the coast and came to San Francisco.  Not being City people we skirted through as fast as possible.  A hop, skip and a jump across the Golden Gate Bridge and we were back to normalcy...I mean back into the country.  😝

To end the day we found a Hotel in Rohnert Park.  The City Motto is "The Friendly City" and we found that to be true.  Here are a few more shots of our drive for the day.

Thanks for following along, here is our route for the day.

We hope you've enjoyed our adventure so far. Day 14 coming soon!!!
