Day 15 started off gloomy with a slight rain.
Even the signs at the beach were filled with gloom.
That wasn't going to stop us from having a fantastic day! From Fortuna we headed North on Highway 101.
Along the drive you find yourself dipping in and out of small coastal towns and giant Redwood trees. Between the Ocean, Redwoods and Mountains, it was hard to keep my eyes on the road.
After driving through a few Redwood State and National parks, we crossed the Klamath river. That takes us to the first stop of the day.
Klamath Trees of Mystery
The Trees of Mystery is a amusement park/information center. They have a sky tram to take you around the park. It's also home to Brotherhood Tree, standing 300ft tall. Here is a park map from their website.
We didn't do the inside of the park. We did check out the attractions our front and the giftshop. They had some cool stuff. Like this Brontosaurus statue poking his head from the tree canopy.
They had this mermaid with a Keep Calm and Dino on shirt. 😝
I did see someone familiar here. It was Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox!
For those of you who don't know who this is. Paul Bunyan is a Lumberjack and part of American Folklore. Babe his Ox was originally white but after a 7 day snowstorm of blue snow, his coat was stained blue forever.
Legend has it, they were able to straighten out rivers by pulling on the land. Others say he created some of the Great Lakes for water storage and the Mississippi River was from Babe knocking over a water tank. This duo is one of my favorite!
Another couple things that are on display. This Bear was enormous and very detailed.
The famous James Earl Fraser "End of the Trail" statue has a replica here. It was carved from a solid piece of Redwood in 1938 by Ambrose Gruenke. You can find more info on the sign in the picture.
Time to get back on the road. As we headed North we came to the Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park.
Honestly, we found these trees to be more impressive than the Avenue of Giants. For some strange reason there is a gap here of pictures and video. Not sure what happened.
Next pictures and video I have is the Oregon state line. In the second picture you'll see the first business as you come into the state. :)
It seems like as soon as you cross into Oregon the roads straighten out. We've been driving on switchbacks and some of the curviest roads in the world for days. This was a nice break. Our first stop, or should I say scenery was this part of the drive.
Oregon State Scenic Corridors
The drive up highway 101 is filled with Scenic corridors. Heading North you'll drive through Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. Once outside that area you come to the Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint and past that is the Cape Sebastian Scenic Corridor.
The route takes you through hills and woods, rocky coastlines and sandy beaches. The Rouge River has a cool bridge once you get up to Gold Beach.
Our next stop is popular for whale watching, we didn't get to see any but it was still beautiful.
Port Orford
It was season for the whales to be traveling up the coast but visibility was poor. This was a really nice little town and had an amazing beach. This picture turned out great even with the overcast skies.

We found some cool rocks around this area. I have to dig them out still and get pictures. We got some Rainbow Moonstone, ocean tumbled Petrified Wood and some Jaspers.
For the last part of this trip it's mainly inland. 101 heads off the coast and Highway 540 continues up it. We stayed on 101 and headed to Coos Bay.
It was later in the afternoon and we were ready to find a room. Upon pulling into town we were greeted with an amazing double rainbow.
The other end of the rainbow was in the bed of this Ford Pickup. I'm not buying it. 😂
A hotel on the beach was in order for the night. We found this hotel and got a free upgrade to this suite with fireplace and kitchenette.

Our view from the balcony was perfect.
This was a great day despite the weather. Now we relax by the fireplace and listen to the waves crash against the shore.
