Epic Route 66 Trip- Day 4

Epic Route 66 Trip- Day 4

June 2022 · 3 min read · Oklahoma

I remember thinking to myself, "Is it ever going to warm up?" as we walked out of the hotel.  The morning was chilly but the sun was out with no clouds.  Time to do some back tracking to get back on route.

We left Enid Oklahoma and headed East.  A little ways down the road we turned and headed South to our first stop of the day.

Arcadia Round Barn

Built in 1898, this unique barn has seen some things.  It's located at 107 E Highway 66 Arcadia, OK and the admission is Free.  Inside this 60ft round barn you'll find 2 levels.

On the first level you'll find the gift shop and some interactive learning.  The upper level is open and currently used for concerts, rentals and a dance hall.

The barn was in bad condition during the 80's and underwent a complete renovation that was completed in 1992.  In 1998, the 100yr anniversary, the family donated the barn to the Historical Society.  Have a look.

A very short drive and we saw a huge pop bottle on the side of the road.  It's a 60ft neon bottle at the Pops 66 Soda Ranch.  I really wish we could've seen this at night.

It's located at 660 W Highway 66, Arcadia, OK and is open 7 days a week.  On the property you'll find what they call food, fuel and fizz.  Outside you can fill your tank with gas, come inside and enjoy some food at the diner and grab a pop of any color or flavor.

We hopped back in the Roadtrip Chariot and hit the road.

National Route 66 Museum

Once in Elk City Oklahoma we found the National Route 66 Museum.  Inside you'll find all kinds of Route 66 history and memorabilia.  You walk through state by state with overhead audio kiosks telling stories along the walk.

There was a over a dozen of full sized vehicles from different eras represented.  Old signs and murals along with life sized depictions of the past were very detailed and period correct.

Next to the museum they have an Old West town called Cowtown.  You can walk through the old buildings and see how life was back then.  They also had several Kachina Doll collections.

Welcome to Texas!

Picked up a sweet rock chip in my windshield. Prepare for that to be in every dash photo.

All along route 66 are old gas stations and murals.  You might recognize this gas station from the Disney Movie Cars.  In the movie it was Ramones Bodyshop.

Now it hosts the Shamrock Texas Chamber of Commerce and a small museum.  Inside were 2 of the sweetest little old ladies we've ever met.  We spent over an hour chatting with them about the route, how things have changed and some local attractions.

One of those attractions was this famous spot.

The Blarney Stone

In 1959 this Texas city was lucky enough to receive a piece of the actual Blarney Stone in Ireland.  They say if you kiss the stone you'll never be at a loss for words and your luck will change for the better!

After kissing the Blarney Stone it was back on the road.  It was getting late and we were trying to find a place to stay.  Amarillo seemed like a good spot to call it a day.
