Epic Route 66 Trip - Day 6

Epic Route 66 Trip - Day 6

June 2022 · 2 min read · Tucumcari City Limit

Day 6 was another windy one.  After talking to some locals we found out we were there during their wind season.  It's been a pretty consistent 30mph wind since crossing into Texas.

We loaded up and hit the road.  Before making it out of Roswell we spotted a Rock Shop.  It's hard passing one of those without stopping.

Inside the small shop was all sorts of specimens.  Some were local and some exotics.  We struck up a conversation with the women who owned the shop about local rocks.

That's when it happened.  She had a map that had been copied many times over the years.  It tells you where to find Pecos Diamonds!

Pecos Diamonds aren't diamonds at all.  They are small quartz crystals ranging from white/clear to reds and even some orange.

Off into the desert we drove.  She did warn us about people at the shooting range not liking folks out there.  When we passed it only 1 person was out there and didn't take notice of us.

We were only 3.5 miles from the highway but it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere.  We found the culvert pipes and some dried out washes.  They were everywhere!   Check out the red circled areas for what they look like.

After about an hour of wandering around the desert trying not to get bite by rattlesnakes, we jumped back on the highway.

Tucumcari New Mexico

A few hours of backtracking to get on Route 66 and we found ourselves in Tucumcari.  New Mexico is famous for well preserved Dinosaur Fossils due to the dry weather.

In town we came to the Mesalands Dinosaur Museum.

This was a very cool spot!  They had rock and mineral collections from around the state.

They also have different Dinosaur fossils and an on-site archeologist you can watch clean fossils they found.  This was a great time and we learned a ton of new things.  Here are some of our favorite exhibits.

Gallup

We spent the rest of the day driving until we found somewhere to stay.  That somewhere tonight was Gallup.  Time to call it a night.

Stay tuned for some really cool stuff on Day 7!!!  Thanks for following along and we hope to hear from you in the comments.
