Indonesia #11: Diving in Komodo – Day 2

White Tip at Crystal Rock

We were especially looking forward to this day as three of Komodo National Park's most famous dive sites were on the program today: Crystal Rock, The Cauldron, aka Shotgun and Manta Point. After breakfast in the dive center (which incidentally is included in the price), the trip started towards Komodo National Park. About 1.5 hours later we were at the Crystal Rock. Hardly in the water, we already had 5-6 white tips in front of nose - very cool!

Crystal Rock is a cone shaped rock in the water which is famous for its fish and coral wealth and notorious for its strong currents. Unfortunately, due to the current, we also had some problems taking good pictures (especially since we only had a cheap copy of GoPro with us), but this dive site is one of the most popular in Komodo for a good reason!

A truly unique experience is The Cauldron, a drift dive between two islands. The special thing about this is that the passage between the islands is getting narrower and the flow is getting stronger. The narrowest point (also known as ** shotgun **) is only a few feet wide. As soon as you drift towards it, the Divemaster gives a signal so that the whole group can turn 180 ° and hold on to the "shotgun". There you can hang in the middle of the current like on a motorcycle and watch the sharks, they love to play in the current. There we also saw a 3m Gray Shark. After a minute or two you let go and continue drifting, as the passage widens again afterwards, the drift tempo also decreases.

At Manta Point there were some mantas as expected. Even though we had seen a few the day before, this was an incredible experience again. New this time was a so-called Melanistic Manta, a completely black and rare specimen.

Auf diesen Tag hatten wir uns besonders gefreut, denn heute standen drei der berühmtesten Tauchplätze des Komodo National Parks auf dem Programm: Crystal Rock, The Cauldron, aka Shotgun und Manta Point. Nach dem Frühstück im Tauchcenter (welches übrigens im Preis inbegriffen ist) ging die Fahrt Richtung Komodo National Park los. Circa 1,5 Stunden später waren wir dann am Crystal Rock. Kaum im Wasser hatten wir schon 5-6 White Tips vor Nase – sehr geil!

Crystal Rock ist ein kegelförmiger im Wasser welcher durch seinen Fisch-, sowie Korallenreichtum berühmt und durch seine starken Strömungen berüchtigt ist. Aufgrund der Strömung hatten wir leider auch ein paar Probleme gute Bilder zu machen (besonders da wir nur eine billige GoPro-Kopie dabei hatten), aber dieser Tauchplatz gehört zu recht zu den beliebtesten in Komodo!

Ein wirklich einzigartiges Erlebnis ist The Cauldron, ein Drift Dive zwischen zwei Inseln. Das Besondere dabei ist, dass die Passage zwischen den Inseln immer enger und damit die Strömung immer stärker wird. Die engste Stelle (auch als Shotgun bekannt) ist nur ein paar Meter breit. Sobald man darauf zudriftet gibt der Divemaster ein Signal, damit sich die gesamte Gruppe 180° drehen und an der „Shotgun“ festhalten kann. Dort hängt man dann mitten in der Strömung wie auf einem Motorrad und kann die Haie beobachten, diese lieben es nämlich in der Strömung zu spielen. Dort haben wir auch einen 3m großen Grey Shark gesehen. Nach ein bis zwei Minuten wird losgelassen und weiter gedriftet, da die Passage danach wieder breiter wird, nimmt auch das Drift-Tempo ab.

Am Manta Point gab es wie erwartet wieder einige Mantas zu beobachten. Auch wenn wir schon am Vortag einige gesehen hatten, war dies wieder ein unglaubliches Erlebnis. Neu dabei war diesmal ein sogenannter Melanistic Manta, ein komplett schwarzes und selteneres Exemplar.
