If you are on holiday in La Palma, you shouldn’t miss a hike to the highest mountain of the island.
This is the Roque de los Muchachos with 2400 m.
The visit of the summit is worth it because of the steep and winding road that goes up. From Santa Cruz to Roque de los Muchachos, it is approx. 43 kilometres - we have not counted the hairpin bends, but there were a lot. When arriving at the parking area, we have overcome 2300 hm.
Our hike starts at a small parking area near the summit. We walk along a beautiful little path. From the very first minute on, the trail we take offers fabulous views over the mountains and the sea.
The Caldeira de Taburiente, in which we had made our last hike, is, however, immersed in the fog.

Quite quickly, our goal for today is in sight: first the observatory and then the lookout point at the outer edge of the mountain.
Observatory as a white point in the distance - our first stop
Due to the good weather, we even see the Pico del Teide on Tenerife with 3718 m. Actually, this is the highest mountain of Spain!
Well, can you distinguish the snow on the summit?
On the right side, we catch sight of the road over which one can drive to the observatory.
What a picturesque landscape!
After about an hour's walk we finally pass the Observatory.
The Observatory comprises a total of 10 telescopes and is among the best equipped in the world.
When passing by these telescopes, however, they seem a bit grotesque.
Here you can see how far we walked until then - it looks further away than it actually was!
At the summit or lookout point of Roque de los Muchachos, we can especially admire the sea of clouds.
We wonder if there is even one clear day to look down into the Caldeira de Taburiente.
After a break, we start our way back. Just before we are at the parking area, we hear a loud crash - that must have been a stone avalanche!
And when we arrive on the road a few minutes later, we actually see what we have heard:
An avalanche on the roadside
A few meters away from the cars, a large rock has broken loose. How lucky we were! That could have ended much worse. Luckily, nobody was hurt and nothing was damaged.
